I've got a boyfriend since a couple of months and he has moved in with me, together with his (stud-)dog, a Drentsch Partridge dog. Now Daan came in season, 29 days ago. Yesterday, my boyfriend was out hunting with his dog and I decided to let all the dogs together in the garden, like I always do. There are 2 speyed bitches, Daan and her 10 month old son. He was perfectly fine around her and not interested in her anymore so I left them to it. All was perfectly fine. Today the studdog is here again and I kept the boys seperated from the girls untill I was back. Well, when I was back, I let them all off and watched them carefully for a while. All was fine again. I then turned my back for a split second to pour a cuppa and when I turned my back again, Daan and the dog were tied. Just when my boss was handing over meds to a client. They could see the whole episode . Anyway, they've been tied for like 20 minutes, a lot of breeders would be very happy with that. I'm not afraid she might be preggers now, it's way too late and she's always ready at the 16th and 17th day (records from all the seasons she's had so far), but I still find it very annoying, that I can't let them off and still have to watch them. I decided to leave them to it, there's nowt I can do anyway if she's pregnant (am not going down the hormone injection route, too risky). There are quite a few experienced breeders on here and I'm curious whether you've seen this before???

Hi Marjolein
I had a bitch, she was saying yes to all dogs the whole time she was in season. Very strange but every time she was in season she did it the same way.
Once I should mate her and the dog and his owner came her the 12 day, then we tried to mate her for 4 days. But the dog wasn´t interested , we tried with another dog and he should have mated her gladly.
I was to the vet and took a blodtest and the vet checked it and said I should wait for 4 more days before I could mate her..... But as she had been in season for 16-17 days we made the descision to wait for her next season instead.
Two weeks later my friend with the dog came here again to visit and she was finished then but he was very very interested then and she just stand there for him. They should have done a mating if we had let them , very strange
We mated her to another dog her next season and took a blodtest to check which day it should be done and she got pregnant and had 7 pups
But she still stands for the dogs every single day on her whole season . Not normal but it happens
I have a friend to that have another bitch and she mated her on the 15 - 16 day and then they were waiting a whole week and did another 2-3 matings. The dog and the bitch was together the whole time. That bitch is always very late, matings on 24 day or so
regards Kristina

I think its hard to say what is 'normal' when it comes to breeding at times. There is the 'old' rule breed them on day 10, 12 and 14 but how many bitches are very early or very late...just like the one in this discussion - for this reason we always progesterone test our bitches so we know exactly when the right time is and also to save any time running around for days on end.
When we ran Diva and Frankie in the yard earlier in the year without progesterone testing we really had absolutely no idea when the breeding took, they bred every day! We had no idea when she ovulated or when the puppies were due, and for that reason we took an ultrasound way too early which showed nothing when she was in fact pregnant it was just too early to tell. This experience really taught us the value of the testing.
Just my 2 cents worth. ;D

About 20 years ago I had a bitch mate with her son on day 24 when I thought is was safe to let them run together. She had been mated to another dog on day12 & 13. I rang my vet and he said it was unlikely she would get pregnant from the second mating and if she did conceive from both dogs, the pups from the second mating would be born at the same time as the pups from the 1st mating and they would be tiny and probably not survive. She ended up whelping 2 days early from the first mating and there were no tiny pups so we knew the second mating to her son had not produced anything. I have another bitch that on her first mating mated with the stud dog on day 5 of her season!(I only took her to the stud dog because she was 'flagging' for my old desexed male and thought I had gotten her dates wrong) She then stood for him when we mated her 3 more times, the last being on day 17. We saw the dog at a show when she was on day 21 and she would have stood for him even then. She conceived on day 8 according to the arrival of the pups. So you can see there can be a big variation in the days that bitches will accept a male, but I think at day 29 you are unlikely to have pups. I guess it means some bitches like sex more than others LOL
Good luck!

We had a bitch mate on day 25 and 26 after her season, do you remember the song by Elton John "I'm still standing" well that was a current song at the time and more than appropriate. The thing we had to watch was that she would have an infection. Some bitches stand at some funny times. Thirty years ago our first bitch mated our dog on day 17 and she had a litter of 10. I thought she was never going to mate because it was a planned litter. The next year when we didnt want a litter we sent her to my mothers on day 4, guess what - she had already mated with the dog on day 1,2 or 3, and ended up with 8 puppies. We have always believed that hormones kick in at times when they are ready, that's why most of my friends these progesterone test when they really want a litter. Liz - Australia

Here's another thought, even if they are neutered, a dog will service a bitch... and if the bitch is mating when she is not in a normal cycle, be very wary of infection causing the problem!

part of the reason bonnie isn't allowed out before 5 weeks is up is because she still presents late in the month, am sure the puppies would look lovely mar the dutch partridge dog looks like a spaniel doesn't it only liver and white??? I've seen one at a shoot I went to.

Well, this is really complex stuff... It is at times like this I'm glad I have a male... All in all Marjolein, I guess the dogs are just echoing your present circumstances in life. When looove (said with a sign-song voice, head tossed back, eyes rolling) is in the air, nobody is safe rute

Take heed Marjolein! Even if Daan has escaped love's sweet spell without falling pregnant, "other" females in your household or vicinity (and I'm not naming any names here, mind!) may not get off the hook so easily... ;D
