Daniela, Excellent is given to a dog who approch the weimaraner standard very well ! Very good is given to a dog who is nice, but with a (medium) fault in the standard, and good is actually almost never given to a dog. This mark is for dogs who has big faults conserning the standard ! The ones who got "good" weren't that good handled, but I don't think it's a breed fault !!!! It's wrong to give a nice dog a lower mark, just because he isn't good handled !!!! Should ask to the ones who saw them in the ring, but I hardly see marks "good".... Of course, if a judge give all excellents, you can believe the judge wants to be "popular". Way of living for a judge And this isn't good as well..... Who will say what's the best ....

Does the FCI provide the judges with guidelines as to what the grades mean?

The grades Excellent, Very Good, Good and Moderate are common in the Judging system from the FCI, which is used almost all over the world by the judges. There are only a few countries left with a different system. And the judge did make another mistake. With a qualification "Good", you are not allowed to place the doggs/bitches. Don't think he was a breed specialist. May be an allrounder.

I heard another weird story about the judge who was judging the Drentsch Partridge dogs. He gave 8 dogs in a class an excellent. He then send the dogs away, apart from the 4 best dogs of that class. But, he made a little mistake and the dog that he'd placed 4th, turned out to have an excellent..... He then decided to change the very good to and excellent so he could keep his fourth place. How weird.....
