I think it is similar as what I feel with my working dobermanns... people that like show don't feel comfortable seeing so "different shape/type" specially when it's because of work, and I know that's not only the work, but also the type of dog you have (it's this way in SchH). I have a thin Dobe that gave me one of my best dobe litters... to make her gain weight I would need to stop working, as her structure and metabolism (do you understand it?) are different. I have another female that works too and isn't that thin... so that really depends. That's why I know how to appreciate ONLY structure (bones)... ;D You are right, don't care... even if I don't put my Weims to work (hunting is prohibited in my country), I really like any type of work dogs can do and I think it's the best way to keep on good brains and maintain typical temperaments.
