Hello there,
I've just read a very disturbing article in the German Weimaraner Forum and would like to check with you guys if this is true.
It's been said that since 1993 you're not allowed to have a Pitbull in the Netherlands. And now you're not allowed to bring any dog into the country (The Netherlands) which looks remotely like a Pitbull.
Three 'experts' assess the dog and if one of them decides it looks like a pitbull it will be taken away from the owner and killed. Apparently there's nothing you can do.
It has been said that even Cane Corso, Alano, Mastiffs, Rottweiler and even Rhodesian Ridgebacks were classiefied as Pitbulls.
The only way to get your dog securly over the border are the FCI papers which state that the dog isn't a Pitbull (well, it actually states the breed).
Dogs which don't have FCI papers and might look like Pitbulls will be killed.
Is this true?

Hi there oceanaussi, I live in Belgium, a country just neighbouring the Netherlands and I never heard talk about this... In fact, I think that Dutch people (overall) are rational and animal loving people and that this kind of law would upset them very hard...to say the least. So I don't think that this story is true and can be catalogued as an 'urban legend'? Marjolein, could you tell us more about this? Greetz

Damn... turns out that I'm wrong (happened before, so don't feel sad ) I just 'googled' after your last postings and found out that you where right...It's called the RAD law (regeling agressieve dieren) But 'only' for dogs that have no pedigree and classify as being a pitbull... So I think that the Cane Corso, Alano, Mastiffs, Rottweiler and Rhodesian Ridgebacks are relatively safe Your also right about the 3 experts... They only seems to look at the dog's characteristics, not at his character (aggressive or not). If the dog is classified as being a pitbull, is taken and destroyed found this (in Dutch, sorry) Wij, keurders van Pitbullachtigen, kijken puur en alleen naar het uiterlijk van een individuele hond. In programming language: if pedigree == yes then Life else Death endif I know that these dogs have a very bad reputation and all and to be honest I really don't like that kind of dogs but this is a very crazy law... If a dog bits it's because his boss has somehow been wrong in educating his dog and in fact messed up his dog... Strange law...and unfair I think... They are shooting the thief even before he has stolen anything

This law only goes for pitbull type of dogs without a pedigree. All other breeds are safe and what has been written on that other forum is nonsense. So no worries please.

Most pedigree-less Pitbull types are not even euthanised btw, but they're taken to a place with people with knowledge of these breeds. Only the screwed up dogs are pts after a judge has said so.

they had a program on tv here a little while ago about people that were breeding pitbulls and shipping them to the UK and Ireland for dog fighting purposes. was a dreadful program and very upsetting to see the state of the dogs but they came from breeders in and around Europe including organised fights where potential buyers got to see the dogs in action I do understand why the dogs are destroyed but these people are flaunting laws that others fall foul of.
