Eating Mud

I know I have asked this before, but it seems all rather odd that my Weimaraners at certain times of the year actually strip grass off the paddock in one area and eat the mud, I never know why this is, do you think its for a mineral ? Or some other daft reason. It is always this time of year and again during late spring they seem to do it. It is always in one spot, then in spring it is in another spot in the field. I am puzzled as to why they do it. They do get a varied diet so I cant imagine it is lack of something. Although I was once told it is because dogs do get minerals from soil ?? Any suggestions.
