I'd love to hear from folks who are actively doing Search and Rescue w/their Weim! Reassuring stories of superb performance from Weims doing SAR would also ease my mind and stop me from worrying about just how adept my 8-month old female Weim is...... She's well along in her on- and off-leash obedience and I've decided to start her tracking myself. There aren't very many American Weims doing SAR, but those that are seem to be quite capable. Please share your SAR stories w/me!

Sorry don't do SAR but do participate in tracking and searching for articles. Most SAR teams here in the UK must be able to go into mountainous areas and the training is around 2 years for a fully operational dog team and means that the handler must be au fait with climbing etc. I don't do anything so athletic.

Weims are strong, intelligent and capable of any job you give them--your biggest enemy will be the temptation to quit. Hang in there and you'll make it. I have both GSD and Weims, and there is a difference in their natural styles--the GSD tends to ground scent and the Weim air scents. When I send Enka out to search--she quarters back and forth on the area I direct her to. It is amazing to watch her work--running full speed you wouldn't think she could POSSIBLY be scenting so fast, but she is. She'll pass a hidden article running full speed(and she's no pokey runner) and stop on a dime-then back up and come up with the article. I've seen her do it 1000 times and it still amazes me. Anyway, there is room for both methods of working in SAR. Good luck.
And welcome to the board--I hope you like it here and come back often. Keep us posted on your progress with the SAR!
