Very interesting everyone! So it sounds like most coutries judge against a standard rather than competing against other dogs. In the US we also compete with other breeds. Sylvia, I handled a dog at a show here last June that whose father was a Mimmtrix dog, he was with a handler for field training, but was doing some confomration shows at the time. Handler had too many dogs so I helped out. We will see the dog run in field trials this fall, can't wait to see how this dog does, always interesting to see non-US dogs run. Anne Yes that can be, and I think it is after that dog she is getting a dog back again... She is importing that dog wherefrom the grandfather is a Mimmtrix dog, and that dog is from Australia if I am right. Mimmtrix Hubert Xardiko At Britfeld. The dog she is going to get a puppy from is Britfeld Winsome Lady Import Australia NSD JH is it right that you mean this dog? This bitch is mated with NFCH, F CH, AF CH Grau Geist Lil's Gust V. Westend MH, CGC, CD, MH, CGC, SDX, RDX, VX The litter is born June 2d,

Anne, Welcome and Hello! (first!) LOL! I own a male from Britfeld. (Britfeld Vito Corleone) and he will be placed into the hunt tests this fall. I can't wait to see what comes of it! He does not run big enough to put into the field trials unless I do the walking field trials here. He is just an awesome hunter and hopfully will obtain his JH this fall and then finish his training for the SH and the MH eventually. His paternal grandmother is Mimmitrix Sally. We have high expectations of him that he seems to be fulfilling every day! I would love to see pics of your "Riley". I also own a female from Deb Meifert's breeding. She is named "Harley" and she is planned for the field trials this fall as well. She is a bit smaller then most Weims that I have seen, but I tell you that she is extremely quick in the field and has just an awesome nose as well as a great drive for prey and a desire to please! I have to wait until the tests and the trials begin though. It is still too hot here to run them. I am in Texas now and there are not many options for me to run them in the NAVHDA, only AKC tests. Although I wish I could run them NAVHDA. I think that Vito and my LH Mike' would do marvelously there! Did you train and run your dogs yourself? That is quite an acomplishment!! I am sooo happy to see more Americans putting the hunt titles on their Weims! I will be running a few in the hunt tests and trials myself this fall... I can't wait to post thier accomplishments here! I highly respect and commend you for doing that with your Weims!! YEAH!!! I have another question for you since you are here in the states.... do you think that the WCA and the AKC will ever allow the LH into the show ring? Canada just (from what I read somewhere on another message board I think..) is going to start allowing them into the show ring in January(?).. They are just so awesome, I think that they really should consider it.. I know it has been a debate here for a while! I don't think that the AKC needs to see them as a different breed, only a variation of the breed and allow them into the show ring next to the smooth coat. That will be the day !!! One other thing.... (Anne wrote) "In the US, Weims are classified as pointing dogs, not versatile dogs (dumb, I know)." (Sorry, I don't know how to quote...) Weims are most certainly 'versatile' dogs. Well, the ones that are actually used for versatility. Yes, just as the English Setter, the German Shorthaired Pointer, the English Pointer.... they are all classified in the "Gun Dog" group. The AKC describes the Weim as "The Weimaraner is a medium-sized gray dog, with fine aristocratic features. He should present a picture of grace, speed, stamina, alertness and balance. Above all, the dog's conformation must indicate the ability to work with great speed and endurance in the field. The Weimaraner has seen more actual competition of various types in the United States than it did in all its decades in Germany." So, yes, even the AKC sees the Weim as a versatile dog. If they were not versatile, then they would not be in the field, the home and in the show ring. Have a wonderful day! Keep up the great work with the field trials.. YEAH!! Melissa

Hi Melissa,
There is an ad in the September WCA magazine of Riley, so if you haven't gotten your mag yet (I just got mine yesterday) you can see him there.
I guess I will see Harley in October, I'm running 2 trials down here and Deb and Myron will be at the trials. Look forward to seeing your girl run. Your description of Harley is certainly indicative of the Westend line. I currently have a pup that is loosely linebred on Ryder, should be interesting to see how she develops.
Oh, when I said versatile dogs, I didn't mean Weims can't do many things, because I know they can. :-) I meant they are not classified correctly as a continental hunting dog that points, retrieves (on land and water) and tracks. As you know field trials merely evaluate field work.... well OK, you have to pass a lame watertest to get your FC, but for the most part, the whole versatile hunting aspects aren't tested. Sorry I was not clear.
As for the LH's... I don't know. I think it could happen, at least I think it could happen more readily than they would accept Blues. But someone has to be a champion of the cause (either) and I don't know if anyone really is....

No, I have not gotten my mag yet! I hope it will be here soon! I will check it out!
Anne said, "I guess I will see Harley in October, I'm running 2 trials down here and Deb and Myron will be at the trials. "
Are you going to be at the ones in Texas? I will not be traveling to CA for them.. I wish it would be possible, but my husband is now traveling because of the hurricane for his job and someone has to be here for them... I don't know if CA would be possible for me currently.. maybe next year! Since I did not have Harley as a puppy, then I was not able to put her puppy/derby points on her... so, for right now, we are just going for the FC and maybe send her to a friend that is just now getting into the field trials for the AFC. I think then I will put her into the hunt tests (just for giggles) and see if a MH is in her future! It is going to be an exciting fall/winter/spring!!
Good luck to you in the upcoming trials.. who are you running?
I also wanted to ask.. I saw that you said that you own a blue.. is she fixed or will you be running her in the hunt tests or field trials or both? Just curious. (Sorry if I am being too nosey).
TTFN! Melissa

<<Well I think the AKC can't stay behind wiht accepting the LH's at the shows. >>
Sylvia, I am not totally sure what you mean here. The problem is that WCA needs to vote to approve a change in teh standard and then submit to AKC for their approval. Until the first step is done with the WCA membership voting to allow the LH's it doesnt' even get considered by the AKC. It's all in the WCA's hands and its membership.
Melissa, We have a pup out of Doc and Chular and she'll just be 6 months so we'll run her for experience in puppy, not expecting anything so young. Riley will run in Amateur stakes, he needs 6 more points for his AFC, and Indy, my blue will run in broke dog stakes. She has broke dog placements but doesn't range big enough to be FT competitive. She is a nice little foot hunting dog though. We'll run her in either SH or MH this fall, just gotta get that backing down a little more. She has a prize I in NAVHDA natural ability. We'll see what this fall brings... she went through some pretty intensive training this summer. Oh, and no she is nto fixed, otherwise, she'd have rating test titles on her.

Melissa, Forgot to ask, since you are in texas if you go to Ardmore. David my boyfriend goes every year. And Riley usually hits the texas trials but we decided not to run him at Midamerica and the other texas trials. Not even sure if we'll do ardmore this year. Next year is Pixy's futurity year so am trying to cut backon some traveling this year.
What's Harley's breeding?

OK I see what you mean. This issue has come up with the WCA on a number of occasions and each time it was not accepted by the WCA. The WCA's stance has for the most part always been that the Weimaraner should be a short-haired Gray dog. The problem today is that no one is being the champion of the LH cause. Unless someone puts together a proposal to be considered and brought to vote, then nothing will happen. I think many do not care about LH's. But I also think that it could pass because everyone knows that it is allowed in Germany. In looking at old records, the reason that most people didn't want the LH's is because it's recessive and people feared that there would be "surprises" in the breeding program. Which is stupid because we all know that the LH gene is alive and well here in the US. From this article: www.weim.net/twn/General/EWood%20-%20StandardRevisions(5-92essay).htm(This article is mostly about the Blue disqualification but since the Blue DQ was tied in the beginning to the LH DQ, the LH DQ is also discussed. I cut and pasted the parts about LH) ---- When the WCA originally moved to have longhair and "blue" Weimaraners disqualified in the early `50s, different rationales were offered for the proposed disqualification in each case. The 1952 "President's Report" of WCA President, Marion Kellogg, states the reason for proposing a disqualification of the longhair Weimaraner as follows: "Long-hair is a recessive factor and ... if there is interbreeding between dogs that have the long-hair recessive factor with the short-haired, which is the dominant factor, some of the pups of such a litter would be short-haired, but carry the longhair factor. In buying a short-haired bitch you could not be sure she did not carry this recessive factor.[1] In other words, the trait was considered detrimental because breeders would not be able to determine with certainty when they might be introducing it into their bloodlines. Although the WCA had earlier (in September 1951) condoned an experiment to see whether the longhair might be established as a separate variety it was under the condition, expressed by Howard Knight, that " ... any longhair litters containing shorthaired pups should not be registered or bred..."[2] By 1952, it appears that many breeders who wished to maintain exclusively shorthaired Weimaraner lines realized that this condition was insufficient to assure the "purity" of shorthairs. AKC had no provision for restricting breeding among varieties of a breed, nor any means of identifying the "carriers" of a recessive variation. Thus, accepting the longhair would make it extremely difficult, if not impossible to maintain any exclusively short-haired Weimaraner lines. In 1952 the WCA decided "... to sponsor and promote only the short-haired Weimaraner." By the 1960's, the movement to disqualify the coat variations had again gained momentum. The Weimaraner column of the August 1963 AKC Gazette, written by Cloie Bover reveals that, by then, a significant segment of the breed carried the recessive longhair gene. In addition, opposition to this variation had once again been voiced by the WCA: "They [the "Club" = the WCA] seem set against facing the fact that so many of our dogs contain the longhair factor and can reproduce it....[4] This remark itself may have solidified those who opposed the longhair. In any case, an AKC "Memorandum" of January 1965, concerning a conversation between AKC's Executive Vice-President, Alfred Dick and WCA Presidentr Gil Wehmann, suggests that support for the variety had waned: "Mr. Wehmann said that long-hairs are no longer a problem -- few if any are around and no one is pushing them as was previously the case."[5] Consequently, when the Standard was revised in 1965, long hair became a disqualifying characteristic in the Weimaraner.

Next year is Pixy's futurity year so am trying to cut backon some traveling this year. What's Harley's breeding? Anne, First, I want to say.. sorry for not getting back on the board earlier.. we got hit pretty hard with 'Hurricane Rita' and just had our power restored so that I could get back onto my computer. I just moved to this area in May of this year and this will be my first year at these trials. I am hoping that they are not as 'rigged' as the ones up north. I am doubting it as not many weims are here and compete. Up north is a GSP and Viszla world! I know that my weims, no matter how good they are/were wouldnever stand a chance in the titling there b/c of so many bias judges. I am not sure where you are speaking of (where is Ardmore?), but I am located just on the Eastern border of TX almost into LA. (only 50 minutes away!) Harley's breeding is of NFC FC AFC Westend's Li'l Sage Rider SH CD CGC NSD NRD V and Heidi's Gretchen Girl out of a FC Rynmichel Sir Knight Von Horn and FC AFC Andick's Big Time Jake breedings. She was bred to an Australian Import male of Britfeld's and all the pups are showing awesome ability already for the hunt. I know of at least 4 that will be placed into the field trials, 2 in Montana and (of course) my 2 here in TX when they are ready. We have extreme hopes for Harley, Vito and their pups in the future. I am trying to talk my other buyers into training and running their pups in the field trials too.. let's see what they do.... I understand the traveling! I don't know what gas prices will do here in the next few weeks, but I dont think it is gunna be pretty! I don't know if a lot of ppl will be traveling to do the trials much this coming season b/c of that reason. I know I won't... I had planned on running in a couple in Dallas area and then going over to Louisiana for a few, but wow, I would be spending more than $250 per trip just in fuel! It is getting crazy here! Now, they are talking about 2 more hurricanes coming in and possibly hitting this side of LA/TX again! JEEZ, after what I just went through,.... I HOPE NOT! I do not envy anyone in FL or up the Eastern Coast at all! Have a great one! Melissa

Melissa,
Glad to hear you pulled out of Rita OK. Crazy these hurricanes. Give me earthquakes over hurricanes any day!
Ardmore is in Oklahoma and where they run the field nationals in December.
Ryder, great dog. My Pixy is linebred on him. Gotta love Jake too! Riley's greatgrandmother Tony FC Outdoors Tony Lama (top producing field dam) was bred to Jake 3 times and what a nick!!! that breeding is still so influential in the top field dogs today.
Leslie,
Thanks, I thought you knew about Riley!
