What a fabulous weekend I’ve had. I had an appointment with Dolf, a very good friend, to hunt for geese last saturday. Unfortunatelly he canceled that but we went for pigeons instead.
We weren’t very succesful unfortunately (all pigeons out of reach), but he managed to shoot one crow. I had Daan with me and well, she isn’t too clever yet. When she hears a shot, she’ll look up in the air, but has no clue that the shot is fired from that gun and that she should look in the direction where the gun is pointing at. She didn’t see the crow fall, as you probably understand. And it was too far away to send her for a blind retrieve (am not that far in training yet) so I helped her out and made it somewhat easier for her. The crow was fallen in the springweat, which was 1 mtr high. It was very difficult, but when I send her away, with her nose in the wind, she started covering the field like I taught her and after a while she brought me the crow. She was very gentle with it, you might remember I’ve had some troubles with her being hard mouthed.
It wasn’t a spectular retrieve, but I was proud of my little girl.
After that we did some training with the dogs. We spoiled Mowgli big time when it comes to fieldwork, and I really want to solve that problem. So I put her on the lead and took her to a field where I saw a male pheasant. He saw us coming and stayed where he was helping Mowgli, hehehe. Anyway, she made a nice atack with her nose high, like she is supposed to do. Maybe this method Dolf adviced me, is the way to go for her. Her problem is that she is very keen on hare. This is due to the fieldtrial training from the Weimaraner Club. They thought it was fab., when Mowgli took off again after a hare. She brought a couple back too (full grown hare) and they really thought she was a natural. Well, I wasn’t too impressed tbh.
But they were, and since we thought they knew how to play the game, we let her chase the hare. Ohhhh, can’t believe how stupid we were then. Anyway, this method resulted in a dog who is very eager for her. She will point a pheasant but birdies are not her main interest.
So I’ll hold her on the lead for a while and try to tell her that we want her to hunt with her nose high and on birdies, not on hare. Hope I’m able to solve this.
In another month I’ll pick up training again. All the baby birdies are quite big already, and they’re already able to fly. One more month and we can work them again.
Then we did some waterwork with all the dogs and a the hare/duck track for Dolfs dog. He has to go to Germany ths autumn for the HZP. We’ll, not everything was perfect, but I have a very positive feeling about this weekend.
