We had to have Shadow, our first ever Weim PTS on Tuesday. He would have been 13 this August.
We really loved him, he was the best, and he taught us everything we know. We feel that we will never ever have another like him. He taught us about showing, he taught us about agility, he taught us about working trials, always excelling (except at showing), offering more than we ever knew what to do with.
He survived a torsion and spleen removal just over a year ago, but he fought repeated infections since then, and his rear end was very low, and over the weekend it became clear that we were being rather selfish, so we said goodbye.
There are a couple of situations that I'd like to share to sum him up. The first was when we had young relatives who'd stay over. He would lie, with one lying over his neck, rubbing his ear, while the other lay over his back. Then, was at a working trial, the only one he ever did, where the hunt pack of bloodhounds came into the field while he was doing his obedience round. He still continued to work for Duncan, and was leading at that trial, until the stays. Dunc tried, but there was no way Shadow was going to allow Dunc to leave him in a field where lots of strangers had just been and left their dogs (after shouting at them!)!! We could never get the out of sight stays, so we only ever trained for fun after that. His party piece was speaking on command, and I used it to effect one day when a drunk approached the front of our house when Dunc was at work. I shot into the house, got Shadow by the collar, took him out, and he sat and barked on command. The drunk ran away very quickly and Shadow, yet again, was the best dog in the world.
