My bitch is the first Weimaraner in the UK to achieve a BH; does anyone know of any weimaraners competing in Schutzhund in Europe?

That is wonderful! Sounds like you'd be JUST the person I was looking for. Have you started her in SchH yet? How are you going to train bitework? I'm thinking play only, I don't want to do it the "proper" way (what the judges seem to prefer to see - true, genuine aggression) - I'm planning on playing lots with my pup and then just turn it into bitework. What are your plans and suggestions?? I'm really excited to see someone wanting to do that too!

Well over here we tend to train in prey drive rather than defence drive.
As such the dog really only sees the sleeve as a retrieve object.
Twiggy has been trained in bitework but she will not be suitable for top competition as she does not have enough interest in it.

This is from http://www.gsdca-wda.org:
Sorry to hear that Allyson (that she is not interested enough), but I think it is still very very nice. I would LOVE to try it one day, too.
Any tips on developing that prey drive in a pup?

No Faust, this isn't a must at all in Germany. I think you're confusing it with the Wesentest and/or mannscharfe test. The wesentest is a must in Germany, before you're allowed to breed. The mannscharfe test isn't a must anymore , they changed that to the Wesentest.

On german forum one person who is a hunter told me they still have to pass this "mannschaerfe" but as part of hunting tests they have to pass. I hope I understood it right... For those who understand german language, he said this: Es war mal für Rüden Zuchtvoraussetzung, eine Schutzhundprüfung bestanden zu haben. Jetzt steht geschrieben:"Wünschenswerte Nachweise für Zuchttiere sind Schutzhundprüfung, HN, Btr, Vbr, Laut, Schweiß sehr erwünscht...."

I don't really know when they changed this Kristina, but it can't be more than 8 years ago. I think he meant the Wesentest ( I understand the German you wrote). If you want to see these tests, have a look at my website. I think the Wesentest Gegenstand isn't working yet, but I will work on that tomorrow, promised!!! home.planet.nl/~vanei074/video.htm

I don't know the German for it, but BH is something like Basic Handler in English(very similar to the German).
Schutzhunde is considered the breedworthiness qualification test under the Schaferhunde Verein(German Shepherd Dog national club) along with Herding. Essentially it is police dog training made into a sport.
It consists of three parts, handling or obedience, tracking, and schutzhund(protection dog-bite work). IPO(Belgian version) and Ring Sport(French version) are very similar and many people compete in several types.

Hi guys, I haven't got a clue what all those tests mean - but I am German, and can translate the paragraph for you Es war mal für Rüden Zuchtvoraussetzung, eine Schutzhundprüfung bestanden zu haben. Jetzt steht geschrieben:"Wünschenswerte Nachweise für Zuchttiere sind Schutzhundprüfung, HN, Btr, Vbr, Laut, Schweiß sehr erwünscht...." which means: It once was a necessity for males to have passed a Schutzhund test. Nowadays it says: "successful Schutzhund test is desired, HN, Btr, Vbr, Laut, Schweiss very desired...." Hope this helps, Christina
