I think Merlin has Kennel Cough, he has a harsh rasping cough and is coughing up white phlegm. It has just started, say 2 days ago. I have tried to research what best to do for the boy, but most articles just say, highly contagious, and you should vacinate dog before taking them to kennels. Nothing about how to help a dog that has it already. Can anyone suggest anything, obviously a trip to the vet would not be a good idea.

Janet, you will have to take the dog to the vets. I doubt any vet will do a home visit for kennel cough assuming that is what it is.
Taking a dog to the vets with kennel cough is a bit like being in a doctors waiting room with everyone coughing & spluttering everywhere - it has to be done & is unfortunate!
Mine have the kennel cough vaccine each year although it is not 100% guaranteed.
A course of antibiotics will clear it up & the vet may jab him to get the drugs into his system quickly.
Hope he gets better soon!

Yikes I wouldn't like to be in the waiting room with a dog that has kennel cough. You could always wait in the car til your turn or wait outside and get them to call you in. Most web sites say that a mild form should clear itself up but how do you know what is mild or not There are homeopathic remedies out there, perhaps Muriel can expand.

Ah Poor Mer - sorry to hear this Janet. Agree with everyone else - you must see the vet for jab. When Luke had it as a puppy I also found Benylin (if you can get him to take it) or a teaspoon of good quality honey helps to soothe. It sounds much worse than it is - but Im sure it makes them feel quite yucky. Hugs and woofs from my lot X Karen

Thanks all, excellent link Tasha. As luck would have it, Mers vet is half day today. Will go and get chesty cough Benylin, and reassess tomorrow morning. Hopefully its a mild form. Looks like he won't be going to Worplesdon Funday though poor lad, don't want to inflict his misery on any other doggies.

Don't worry about it Jan. Of course you can take him to the vet, but since this is a viral infection, ab's won't help solve it. It will help to prevent a bacterial infection. If one of mine has kennel cough, I only give homeopatic cough syrup. I don't like the use of AB's when there is no need to.

That's good to know for sure Mar. I wasn't sure but thought it was a bit like our common cold. I am not a big fan of using ab's unless it is really necessary.

Get well soon Merlin.
Jan - our vets operates a sensible policy of dogs waiting in cars if you KNOW that your dog or other animal has a contagious illness. The vet will also if necessary come outside the surgery to see the animal.
I would make and appointment and go. The problem is that many people do not know kennel cough or other contagious diseases (human and pet) so in fact it is just like a Drs surgery. The fact that you are able to warn the vet should mean that they try to see you when they know their surgery is not busy.

Children's Benylin is supposed to be good, or honey. I'd probably go for honey. CS I imagine would help too. Boost the immune system too. The only time I was involved with a dog with KC, I was told to keep her away from other dogs and that it is not contagious to humans. There was no jab for it then, dog recovered fine.

I believe the 'vaccine' which is actually a squirt up the nose his a mixture of a few different strains. There is no guarantee that the strain they give is the one your dog may contract in the future.
My vet also told me that the boosters contain an element of this vaccine too - not sure how much, but that is what he said.
My kennel does not ask for the kennel cough vaccine but if there is an outbreak they use a homeopathic remedy.

Roxy and then Phoebe had kennel cough last November, Jan. Think Roxy must have picked it up at puppy training?
It is a horrid rasping noise and quite infectious. I think that the vet prescribed ab's as a precaution for Rox as she was a little pupster, and we were about to go on hols with them.
We had to isolate them (from other dog socialisation) for about 10-14 days and they were fine.
Don't give up on Worplesdon, Jan......poor Merlin. Hope he feels better soon.

Poor lad had a rough night, me included. Phoned Vet this am, she said, unless there is loss of appetite or refusal to drink, and/or discharge from nose and difficulty breathing, to administer the Benylin, reduce excercise and ofcourse no doggy socialisation. It can last from 1 to 3 weeks. If any of the other symptoms minifest then Vets immediatley as it could go to pneaumonia (sp?) Even if Mer can't make Worplesdon, I will, its a sort of pilgrimage now !

It's usually gone within 5 days, but it can last up to 3 weeks indeed Jan. When is this Worplesdon?

Hope that he's getting a bit better now Jan. Keep an eye on it getting chesty, but certainly Rox and the Pheebs were better in days - but they weren't especially ill, just noisy.
The first Worplesdon you and me went to, we met and you were on a pilgimage alone then as well, with Dear Storm at home not having been inoculated. I had dear old Jazzy with me, the very senior girl there!! We were a bit new girls on the block, and we met Paul and Julie and Richard (where is Richard?)!
Happy Days.

And I won the raffle! Paul's P&O Channel crossing which was superb
