Marg, in answer to your questions. yes he is warm to touch, yes he has a strong suck reflex, No he isnt breathing with his mouth open, he is breathing with his mouth closed but he sounds like he has a really bad cold. Dont know about the urine as mum is still stimulating him. yes he will cuddle up and he does do circuits of the whelping box,. In fact found him wandering around the dining room the other day. He doesnt seem to be running a temp but it is difficult to tell as thermometer too big for his bum, but he doesnt feel overly warm. No he doesnt cry, he sleeps a lot like the others but is awake and barking with the other and he try to play too. Worringly he isnt gaining any weight and although feeding from mum he will bring it back if he has too much. he will lap boiled water and manuka honey, he hates the antibiotics he is taking. he doesnt seem to have diarrhea...
Thanks for your help
Lynn

Thanks for the information. I would make sure that he is warm enough. Is the room that the litter is in hot enough,as any pup having problems will drop in temp. This what most often kills them. In terms of the antibiotics are you going him oral drops? If so open his mouth and pop them on the back of his tongue and close the mouth and stroke him under the jaw to make him swallow the drops. Then give him some milk or water to drink. Can you also tell me when he sleeps does he twitch? I will have a talk to the vets at the practice where I work, but at three weeks of age you could start to wean him on to puppy food that is moist and mushy. Keep the fluids up and keep him warm.... Lynn, I have spoken to the vets...their suggestion was warmth and food, especially if he is not coughing. They suggested that you could supplement rather than wean so that he is getting his mums milk as well as something more substantial. They say it is difficult to diagnose from afar, but if he isnt running a temp and is active than go with the food, the cover of antibiotics will not do any harm. They said however that he may have internal problems.. not fully developed. My thought is that he wouldn't have made it this far if this was the case. Any way you just have to be positive and do as much as you can. Give the little guy I hug from me... I'll send some prayers his way. let us know how you go. Best of luck. Marg

More Reiki on the way.
Could you try the thermometer under a leg, as in underarm as they do with kids?

Your pup sounds exactly like a pup from my last litter. I named him Titch as he was so much smaller than the other 2. He would be weezy too but I put that down to him being so small. He never had antibiotics, my vet didn't think he needed them. When it came to weaning them, I weaned them as normal but on an evening I would bring Titch into the lounge to feed from Pagan. I decided to wean the two fat bloaters completely & try to get Titch the milk + a bit of solids. He never seemed to eat much solids but would suck Pagan dry so I was happy with that. He went to a home where I can only assume he is doing well [haven't heard a word since the day he left ] but he was by far the cockiest due to all the individual attention he got. There are some photos of him in my gallery, [towards the bottom of the page] he's the one called Zac [Titch suited him better I thought] but you can see the difference in size. www.minstergate-weimaraners.org.uk/photo%27s.htmI'm sure your pup will be fine Lynn but it is a worrying time & I know exactly what you are going through.

He didnt make it. He could hardly lift his head when I came home from work, he didnt want to open his eyes. Took him to the vet who said he was surprised that he had lasted as long as he did. He was very weak and couldnt keep anything down, even the water with honey was coming back. There was something very obviously wrong. RIP little man. Lynn

I am very sorry to hear about your little puppy. Sometimes it is for the best. I am worrying today because my dear friend had an operation 3 weeks ago and was in intensive care. He nearly died twice, and then has had up's and downs. He has had pneumonia. This morning they are cutting him open because his stomach is not working and its such a worry. Trying to be positive though. He has a wife and two children and 3 Weimaraners. Rachel

Lynn I am very sorry to hear that despite your care that this little guy has passed to Rainbow Bridge. There must have been something wrong with him internally.... he just wasn't meant to stay with us. I am off to light a candle to show him the way to the Bridge. Prayers and healing thought s coming your way from Australia. Go and give all the others a big hug.

So sorry Lynn, I felt he wasn't meant to stay here, but you did your best and that's all any of us can do. He's all better now, running at the bridge with all our beloved ones.
Rachel, prayers and Reiki if wanted for your friend, hope he recovers.
