It concernes about A puppy of my litter 'Arthur' (17 weeks now): till last week his head lookt normal. Now his occiput is big, like an egg.
You can feel fluid or something like a cyste under the skin.
I suppose he just hurt his head last week, and has some oedeem as result. He has no pain when you touch it.
Has anyone already seen such 'egg'-like occiputs??
Do I have to worry?
Please react soon, his owners are worried (as the vet thought about brainfluids on that place, and he could die..??!) Arthur is in very good health and social puppy, no other abnormal signs.
Thanks

He could have chipped the bone, then there would be fluid, and it would have to be opened, cleaned out and drained, etc., he should see a vet...
When I was 17 yr old my german shepard was playing with my father's second weim named Misty and crunched that bone, which chipped and swelled. We had to have surgery asap. We were supervising the play but it happened by accident, quickly. To this day my dad does not like german shepards. It was truly an accident and in play, but weims are quick and wiggly or bouncy and that knowledge bone can really stick up there...I recommend at least an x-ray to see if its chipped...let us know?

The best thing is visiting a vet as soon as possible... Don't they have eveningshifts ? Hope it's not a bad thing, a few hours can make a difference... I can call our vet day and night, if it's something acute ... Good luck !

He saw a vet today, but he didn't dair sticking a needle in it, and could not say anything (just about brainfluids, tumor etc, and made the people very scared you can imagine) ... and maid an appointment in a Clinnic tomorrow.
You have vets and vets... as we all now...
I recommended to go to an other vet... (I now is a good one and could take a X-ray direct), but is was a bit' to far' for the people .

We have seen this several times in recent years in Australia, it occurs mostly in young pups from bumping the head, our Jett came out of quarantine with what looked like an egg on his head it was huge, sometimes it can take months to go down and our vet just gives us a roll on anti inflammatory. I would be surprised if your pup is not experiencing the same - it can look really ugly.

I hope everything is sorted for you soon. If it is a bump and not too serious some Arnica 30c would act as an anti-inflammatory and help any bruising. Fingers crossed it is nothing serious.

Any updates yet? Poor pupster - hope he will be ok. We all know what puppies are like when they have their mad 5 minutes - anything can happen.

Hey,
got some news from the owners of Arthur..
They took Arthur to the clinnic and its a cyste. They took some fluid, no bad cells were found.
An opperation is planned for august 21.
I ask myself if it really is necessary to opperate? As it always leaves a scar... Like Narelle said: patience and anti inflammatory...?
Arthur has no pain at all, so I suppose it wont be a problem that he has 'an egg' on his head for a few months. I will contact my vet to ask.

Great news! I think...as no bad cells where found I mean, better this then a tumour... About the operation, could you get a second opinion?

Great to hear Arthur did not have bone fragments, that is why we had to operate years ago.

I wouldn't operate so soon. You can always empty it with a needle, inject some cortico-steroids in it to see whether it will go away this way.
Operation would be a last option for me.

Sorry I didn't update you all, I forgot my topic :-(
But to lett you all know that Arthur is doing just fine, he is know a very handsome boy of 9 months.
I had cancelled the operation and I incisted to visit the vet of my choice. As I was no favorit for operation. And as Marjolein posted: a short-working injection of cortico-steroids did work!! After a period of time no 'egg' on is head anymore.
