Can you give pain killers to a pregnant bitch? Either Rimadyl or paracetamol.

I don't know about paracetamol, but Rimadyl is an anti-inflammatory.
And as I had a very sad experience with this last drug - my weim died ... - I will never ever use it again. I'm aware that severe side effects are very rare. Rimadyl advises to consult the vet if they occur, but the problem was that the emergency vet wouldn't even believe my dog's sudden and bizarre seizures might be related to the drug. So in addition to the pills, she got another shot of Rimadyl. And the seizures didn't stop, so I planned to go to my regular vet the next day, but I didn't even get the chance. The following day my dog just dropped dead in front of my husband's eyes. A dog doesn't drop dead from a light arthrosis ...
So no more of that drug for my dogs, never ever again.

I wouldn't give paracetamoll coz it's not tested on dogs so you can never know whether it's safe or not. On the prescription leaflet of Rimadyl they don't mention pregnant bitches, so it should be safe to use it. I'd only use drugs like that if absolutely necessary btw, despite the fact that Rimadyl is fairly safe.
Ann, am sorry to hear about your "rimadyl-experience"!!!!! Probably an allergic reaction to it I think. Very rare, but possible unfortunately...

I don't like using any drugs if I can help it. There are plenty of natural remedies out there to use. Arnica is a pain killer and an anti inflammatory depending how bad the pain is of course. Whats going on Claire? Ann, I am so sorry to hear of your experience, how terrible for you all.

Did you manage to get it all out Claire? If not Silicea will eject it. I used it on Holly and it came up like a bubble the same night and then burst washing it all out. You can bathe it in some Colloidal Silver to stop infection.

Yikes, I wouldn't give anything during pregnancy, and certainly not Rimadyl. Check with your vet, Claire, just to be on the safe side.

I too would not give pain killers. Dogs generally heal quite well, I would check the pad to see if any thorn is left in. You can soak the pad in cooled boiled water and salt to help wash the area. I would probably apply something to the pad if it starts to get infected. Even good old TCP is pretty good for cuts on dogs.
Brooke tore her toe nail completely out last week, it went hot, and smelly so I bathed it and this week it is fine.
Poor Pagan hope she is better soon. These dogs are here to try us I think as mine are always in the wars.

Thanks for the replies. Pagan does seem to be walking normally now without being given anything so hopefully it was nothing.

Claire get some propalis liquid. It is a miracle in a bottle. You can put it on any cuts, grazes, bites. and it speed heals and is antiseptic and antibiotic. It is made by bees and is full of good stuff. I always have a bottle and the last time my boys had a fight I put this on their puctures wounds and I didnt need any AB's or anything... they healed great.
Alternatively get some Manuka honey. 10+ or 15+ if you can get it. It works in a very similar way but with this you can give it to dogs if they get an upset tummy, it puts back all the good bacteria into the gut. Humans can benefit from it too! lol
I couldnt be without both in my cupboards and "fingers crossed" I havent needed a vet in ages.

I decided to take some Propalis for a sore throat a while back but ignored the instructions on the bottle to drop it into some warm water, was being impatient ;D. I just wanted to see what it tasted like and wish I hadn't . I thought it was going to be sweet like honey but it tasted like I had eaten a bowl full of dandelions. Colloidal silver is great to keep in the house too. It can be used to bathe cuts and grazes, eyes, ears, put in their food. It is a natural antibiotic and used for humans too. It is tasteless so pleasant to take.

We were in Fortnum and Mason just before Christmas, looking at all the stuff we couldn't afford ( ), and as we neared the counter, she picked up a jar and started telling me how she uses it for her dogs. I was amazed.

It sounds to me like an infection might be going on. You might need some antibiotics. Keep an eye on it and if it looks red, inflamed or swollen, get her to the vet. Depending on how big it was of coarse, I wouldn't think she should be lame from a thorn stick----it could be the tip is broken off in there and causing an infection.

Another good thing to have on hand is Lavender essential oil. It's an anti-bacterial, and an anti-inflammatory - may even have anti-biotic properties but I can be sure without looking it up. Proven to aid skin healing too. It can relieve pain, but more often associated with migraine and tesioin pains in the head.
Can be safely used on humans throughout pregnancy, so should be OK for a pregnant bitch. But please don't chance any other essential oils as some can bring on contractions - and therefore labour.
We use this a lot when our Spaniels feet get sore and irritated and he chews them, as it treats it ands he does not lick at the wound. I've also used this preventatively dropped into wounds as a pure oil. Done this on both humans and dogs. Whenever anything gets pulled out, lavender oil gets put in.
For swelling, and heat, try cold chamomile tea compresses (maybe try a footbath for feet). Calendula is a chamomile so as long as you use pure tea it will have a good effect.
All of this of course is only going to help before the dog can see the vet, but it can work completely if it is a while before you can get there, and especially if the bitch is pregnant and you don't want to take her unless you have to.
