I thought I'd let you know that Cassie torsioned again on Thursday 13th March, at about 4am in the morning. She has survived the emergency surgery (again), and is hopefully going to have her stitches removed tomorrow.
She's making a good recovery, considering she'll be 12 in July. Izzy has been so gentle with her - a true little lady (in contrast to the minx she can be!!)

Poor Cassie. Did they fastend her stomach to her ribs? They did it on Bacchus, when he had his second torsion and he is doing very well now for all ready two years now. He is eleven now. I hope Cassie does the same.

Healing thoughts on the way Sian!!! Unfortunately you see this more often, once they've had their first torsion.

Chatting to Sian the other night she told me that Cassie has now had a gastroplexy. Abbie had a gastroplexy after her torsioin at a year old and the next 8 years were thankfully ok.

Daft old thing! Cassie spent a considerable amount of time this morning trying to eat the snow! Now, I'm no vetinary expert, but I'm sure eating snow can't be good for a traumatised stomach...
She's now eating well again, and bickering at the puppy, so I guess we're nearly back to normal!!

Here in Australia, we routinely do gastropexies on all deep chested dogs. At the clinic where I work weimaraners are done sometimes as an elective, but otherwise if they have to be anaesthetised for some other reason. We have seen a dramatic drop in the number of dogs bloating and torsioning since the introduction of this procedure. I have had all of my dogs done. They will only ever bloat and not go to torsion - this is life saving. Dogs that have torsioned need to be watched carefully as a high percentage bloat a second time within two weeks of the initial episode.

That's really interesting, Fyreside. Cassie didn't bloat on either occasion. Both times, I was aware that she was in extreme distress, and drove straight to the vets. The vet puts her recovery down to the fact that she was operated on so swiftly.... A good reminder to those new to the nightmare of torsion about the risk of a re-torsion. I've been sleeping downstairs with Cassie since the incident. (She's too stiff to go up the stairs until the Seraquin is re-started, and I'm not leaving her on her own downstairs). I know I'm a light sleeper, but I'm not sure I'd pick up on her in-pain pacing from upstairs.... Anyway, the stitches came out this morning, and the vet is very pleased with her progress. So she can now have off-lead walks again (already been having on-lead walks, as boredom meant she wouldn't eat ) and she doesn't have to wear her t-shirt...

I thought I'd share a picture of Cassie and Izzy playing in the snow yesterday morning, just so you can see how well she's feeling in herself... (Click on the "thumbnail" picture to see the full-sized image)

Izzy is really scolding and happy at the same time!! Cassie the queen, we are so happy to see you are feeling much better, big hugs and we won't try hugs for Izzy, but we're jumping for joy, too;)
