I am feeding my bitch Leah, on chicken wings and raw veg. She gets the runs bad when I feed a complete food. Other than buying the veg fresh is there something else that she could have instead...? I dont always have fresh vegetables in.
I am giving her 2 wings per meal (she is fed twice a day), at the first meal she also gets some wholemeal biscuit and fresh veg. At the second meal she gets the wings plus fresh veg. She will also get liver and kidney occasionally.
Any tips?

Hi Lynn,
Are you feeding raw meat and biscuits together in the same meal? If so, I would not recommend that. It is better to stick to just raw meat and meaty bones for one meal. If you want to feed biscuits, then it would be better to feed those separately. The digestive times for both kinds of food are very different, and it can lead to terrible wind problems when you feed them together, and it could make the dog very uncomfortable. Feeding veggies at the same time as raw meat is ok though.
When feeding veggies - are you pulping raw veg, or are you feeding steamed or cooked vegetables? If you feed veggies raw, you'd have to pulp them - else they are of no nutritional value whatsoever for your dog. If you steam or boil them, then it's ok to feed them the way we would eat them ourselves.... You can mix biscuits with veggies, but quite frankly, if your dog has got digestive problems, I would be careful with those. Biscuits can cause the runs.
****is there something else that she could have instead...? As for fresh vegetables .... fresh green ones would be best, but if you steam or boil them, frozen veg will be ok. I do feed raw, and I won't give Kimber veggies every day. I vary - if I have some, he'll get them, if not, he'll get another chicken wing or something else instead..... Just to vary the diet, you could also feed plain Bio-Yoghurt (loads), one or two raw or boiled eggs per week, Sardines in water or tomato juice, a small amount of porridge oats cooked in water (I add plain yoghurt to that when it's cooked) , a small amount of tinned baked beans, or fruit (anything she will eat - mine eats everything).
I don't know if it is because of Kimber's bowel problem ( he suffers from IBD ), but I find that whilst he has no problems eating cooked or steamed veggies, when I feed raw pulped ones, it sometimes upsets his motions. So I tend to stick to giving him cooked leftover veg from our own supper - but that could be just he and his delicate intestines....

Thanks for the reply Christina. I havent been pulping the veg, just giving raw carrots, brocolli, sprouts, cabbage... infact anything I have in. She also get a raw egg once a week and liver and kidney occasionally. her motions are very solid, very small and not smelly. It is a wholemeal mixer biscuit I give her once a day. She, like your Kimber will eat anything I give her. Never thought about Baked beans or porridge oats. They all get sardines in tom sauce if they arent eating very well to tempt them to eat and I have only given bio yoghurt when theyhave had a course of antibiotics to build up the good bacteria again.... I havent noticed that she is more windy than normal, but hey when you have 5 weimies a hubby and a teenage son you get used to a funny smell in the living room I have heard of people giving keepers mix and seen "easy green" advertised in the papers.... what are these and are they good to give to the dogs? Thanks Lynn

Hi Lynn,
Keeper's Mix is a conditioning supplement containing powdered kelp, celery seeds, alfalfa, nettle, rosemary, psyllium husks, clivers and wild yam root which are said to promote good coat, healthy digestive system and good overall natural health.
My dogs do well with it added to their meals.
