After my pup mearly 5 months old got ill , my vet gave us a canned food that suitable for use for up to 8 weeks , we have to change pups food soon and wondered what recommendations there are for canned ? pup b4 now had always had dried food , but she seems so much better on canned food and not sure whats good for her and what isnt .... here are a few i have been considering ...
Denes Canned Dog Food Forthglade Cooked Meat Anglian Natures Menu
Obviously I need to be able to buy on line or local to us in the UK.
ALSO WHEN DO I NEED TO STOP GIVNG PUPPY FOOD & CHANGE TO ADULT ?
Many thanks in advance x

There seem to be a lot of different schools of thought. One being too much protein in the puppy diet and making them grow too fast. I kept Abbie on a puppy diet for about a year or so but I did change her over to a lower protein one on the advice of a breeder. www.oes.org/page2/4298~Puppy_food_How_long.htmlTake a look at the discussions on the above link.........

There are as I put my pups on Arden Grange Prestige [top of the rangea adult food] at about 8 weeks old. I do this with the guidance of my vet & also of AG. My vet also does the same. I have to say, I have never had a problem but I know others prefer to feed a different way. Chappie is very good as it is a light meal, nature diet, butchers tripe. Why can you not feed her a dry diet only now? I only mix tinned in with Quba's dry otherwise she would never eat. Pagan has always had dry since she was weaned.

I can , its not been suggested that I shouldnt , only that the past couple of weeks she has been on canned food for sensitive canine & she loves it and seems to enjoy so much more than the dried food she was on b4 which was rice & kibble.

That is why Quba has wet food in her dry as she had a dicky tum as a pup, gave sensitivity control for a few days & then wouldn't entertain dry on it's own.

About Chappie. I swore by it for Abbie. She was on the chicken dry. It kept her slim but huge poos and not very firm. I stayed with it because she was fit and healthy and I was worried about putting her on something that might not be kind to her iffy tum after her torsion. Put it down to being inexperienced maybe. However, I lost her at the age of 9 (all but a week) so was it healthy enough I now ask myself. Who knows.
Now I am a lot more confident and feed a very varied diet, introducing a bit of this and that over a matter of months.
Have to say I used to like Arden Grange but the last bag we had in June (breeders bag) did not agree with Holly. She was sick and had the runs quite a lot and after about a month (we were on hols for 2weeks of that) I ditched the bag. Before that she had Arden Grange lamb and it suited her well but she did put weight on with it, quite a high fat level I think.

just back from looking at our local pet store and they have the naturediet available & they said its very popular and always on theiir weekly order , I asked if they had it available for a puppy & they said they recommend giving the junior for weim of Mitzi`s age , so will have to see if thats ok to give by reading further .... Also poped into the local butchers and asked very nicely for a fresh ham bone Mitzi`s in heaven with it .....

The ham bone might be a bit salty - watch how much she drinks You can always ring Naturediet, number on their website and they will help with advise but remember they are selling the product. Likewise most companies. If I am using Naturediet or Forthglade I always do half and half with kibble + a little water as the kibble seems to sustain them longer. Both my girls got the early morning gurgles with an empty tum and puked bile in the mornings on just Naturediet alone. My theory is that it is so digestable (which is good for a weim in one way) that it goes through quickly and the tum is empty for longer. Just a theory mind .

You don't have to do kibble just cos I have to do it. She may be ok on ND - suck it and see. I would guess she will need anything from 2 - 3 packets of ND a day (without kibble). If she starts to get too fat then cut her down slightly if she gets ribby then up it a bit. It is better to judge by eye than weigh it out according to guidelines as every dog is different. She is still growing so probs 3 depending on how much exercise she has. Also you could think about giving her 3 meals a day rather than two big ones but at the end of the day it is whatever suits your lifestyle. About the water. I wasn't suggesting you keep an eye on whether she has any in her bowl or not more watch how much she drinks in one go. Gulping water, especially after a walk when they are gasping for air may not be a good idea. I'm going to make you paranoid at this rate, so I better shut up. Oh and bones can make them loose so don't be suprised, but I doubt she will get much off that great big thing.

no worries , i already am there is hardly anything on the bone meat wise butchers knew it was for a pup so chose a very bare 1 , wow she can clunk that thing everywhere ;D but enjoying it very much .. as for the kibble i have 4 bags here so need to use it up so not to let it go to waste. at the moment she is having 3 meals @ 3/4 of a tin ... as recommended by vet. b4 it was 2 meals aday ... her walks are only once aday at the moment as her limp isnt improving ... she needs to be seen by the vet although she isnt bothered by it at all i can touch everywhere around her leg right to her muscles on and around her sholder blade with out even a flinch from her... just looks uncomfortable to me and a little unsure ? poor girl. I feel bloody usless sometimes

She probably just pulled something and needs to rest it. My Holly is still limping after her walks at night so I am going to put her back on the Glucosamine and Chondroitin. They are such a worry aren't they, but I wouldn't be without them. I could do with a huge bone like that for Holly. She somehow manages to gets lumps off bones and I have to take them away as she then sicks up the little bits. Her teeth are not fantastic so would love a nice smooth bone like that. Pass it on when Mitzi has finished with it ;D ;D

Stick it in the freezer when not using it. Some bones can be quite hard for them and you have to watch their teeth. It's a bit of a minefield out there about bones. Somebody posted something about it on another forum today and I am looking forward to the discussion.
The only time I worry about them is when they start to get chunks off and then swallow them and they may get trapped. My girl had chick wings last night (whole) and she just crunches them a few times and then swallows whole. Worries the life out of me. Some articles assure you they can digest bone and others show x-rays of bone stuck in the intestine, teeth, throat. Yikes........
