Hi, I have been feeding my two Weims (aged 5 and 18 mth) on beast heart, which I basically boil up every day for them They also have dried mixer with that. I was told dogs can get distemper with meats. Is this true, and will my babies have any set backs with beast heart in the long term?

Meat is good for dogs, even better than kibble I think. But, don't cook it. You kill all the good stuff by boiling it. There is more to find about feeding raw meat on this forum.

I agree with Marjolein. My Blaster has got a very delicate stomach and he often has problems with his stools but when eating raw meat he feels great, full of energy and no problems with his stools any more. Read more about BARF. I recommend this way of feeding your dog to you.
Good luck Magda&Blaster

Hi Sue. There is too much phosphorus in meat alone and other things need to be added, especially bone for calcium. Like Mar says boiling meat, veg any food really kills the nutrition in it. I give Holly raw lambs heart now and then but I think it would be a bit rich for every day. They need a variety but it also has to be convenient for us to use too. I don't have a separate freezer for Holly so just buy some Prize Choice now and then. This is minced meat with bone mixed in it all ready done. www.prizechoice.co.uk/products/mincedmeats/ I then add some veg. If the veg is raw it needs to be pulped in order to break down the cell walls. Alternatively you can slightly steam or even freezing something like a carrot will help break down the cell wall. A lot of dogs like a hole raw carrot but this is purely recreational only as they get no goodness from it. Here is an article that may help you: www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm#top

* Protein Too much protein causes the kidneys to work overtime to rid the body of excessive waste. This may contribute to kidney failure. * Calcium Too much calcium can actually retard growth. Other problems related to this include skin problems and deficiencies in phosphorus, zinc, copper and iron, leading to a variety of health problems. * Phosphorus Too much phosphorus may cause bone problems and could also contribute to kidney disease. * Sodium Too much sodium can contribute to hypertension, heart and kidney disease. * Fat Fat is important to supply the calories needed for active, high-energy dogs and growing puppies, but too much causes obesity in inactive or obesity-prone adult pets. From this web site: www.african-boerboel.co.za/choosingfood.htmVery informative about nutrition.....

I heard that it is. At least that's what I was told by a friend who had problems with his weim.
