Hi
Has anyone ever had the problem of someone stealing their pedigree when its on line and used ?
The reason I ask is that I have never put my pedigrees on line on my website. A friend of mine breeds cats, and she found out that from her website this breeder stole the pedigree of her stud cat and it was used to create a false pedigree. Since speaking to her, I also hear that it goes on in the dog world.
I also had something very similar with a local guy bragging to a puppy owner that he had a puppy out of my dog and the puppy buyer contacted me to find out more info about the sire, and I told him that my dog had not sired his bitch. Because its word and mouth, their is not a lot I can do about it. I was real upset at the time. Because the guy did not KC register he was under no rules. Plus because he did not give a pedigree their was nothing written down. So it was all word and mouth, just saying his puppies were from my dog. What a CHEEK!

Funny you should post it, because I am just finishing developing a website for our Gundog Club here and this same question came up - should we or should we not put any pedigrees of the dogs online. I would have never imagined anything like that (people stealing information to create false pedigrees), but when you think of it, it makes sense. Then again, there are whole pedigree databases (including on the UK Weims) that are publicly accessible, or one could just figure it all out by looking into show catalogues?

Very true, I am not for or against as I cant make my mind up if I should or should not include my pedigree's on my site. I think I probably will not put them on, but it will be interesting to see what others think too.

Well i have the pedigrees for our dogs online. But I am carefull with the registrationnumbers. I think if you only place them with names someone else cannot do a thing with it... For making false pedigrees they need the registration numbers as well I never had a problem with someone stealing it. I only place 3 generations online, for futher info they have to as me.

I don't know what the situation is like in other countries but here in the UK it easy to get a copy of any KC registered dog's pedigree.
All you need to know is the name of the dog and its KC registration. A doddle as these are printed in all show catalogues.
Anyone can ask for a copy of a pedigree of any dog, you do not have to own it.
It does cost a few pounds.
So whether you choose to publish it or not is immaterial.

Same here. If you want info about a certain dog, you can go to the website of our kennelclub and you can find all the information about reg. numbers and microchips. I will display the peds on my website (once it's ready).
