My bitch had 3 dog puppies born on Easter Sunday by caesarian section. She is fine & the pups seem fine. There is 2 normal sized pups & 1 small one - Titch to his friends!
Anyway, I haven't been able to leave Pagan with the pups yet as she is always wanting to carry Titch around. She doesn't really want him in the whelping box at all although she will let him feed & she does clean him up.
Does anyone know why bitches want to carry pups around? I have tried telling her off but I don't want to tell her too much as I don't want her to reject him totally.
Any advice much appreciated!

Oh bummer Claire, what a shame she couldn't do it on her own. With one of my bitches, it was not a good sign when she carried them. She knew something was wrong and wanted it out of the whelping box so it would die. Survival of the fittest. Daantje did it too, but only the first (maybe 2) day (s). There was nothing wrong with these pups. I think it's just instinct and they don't really know what to do with this feeling. Hope ickle Titch is ok!!!! How small is he?

A co-worker of mine is nursing 2 pups because the mother died. Is there the option of nursing him yourself since he is smaller and she's carrying him around? Or I wonder if that would cause rejection on mom's part? I'm interested in what reasons they would carry them around. When I was young, our family dog had pups and the only one she carried around was the one that died, she was looking for a place to bury him. What does she do while carrying him around? Where does she put him? Good luck with the little guy!!

I know this is an old thread but just came across it.
Same thing here. Our first ever litter, the dam rejected two puppies by bringing them to us in her mouth and casually leaving them on the bed for us to look after, which we did, but unfortunately, they died just a day or so later. It's as if she knew that they were not up to par.

Better late than never!
All was well with the pup in the end & as far as I know he is doing well in his new home. No news is good news I hope.
I know what you are saying & I would be inclined to think that too as mothers know best. I did wonder if she was picking him up because she was bored. Only having 3 pups is hardly time consuming.

Well that's good news regarding the little puppy. I remember we had a really small puppy in a litter of eleven. We called him Eugene after the geeky kid in Grease ;D he went locally and you know what, I saw him a year or so later, and he was bigger than the biggest puppy in the litter. I couldn't believe it!
