We don't usually do it until 4 weeks as sometimes before its too early and you cannot get a 'definite' answer.

Would it matter by 2 days before the 4 week stage do you think?

If you want to know how many pups are there, you should make the scan between 28th and 35th day, in other words in the 5th week of pregnancy.

My vet won't tell you how many pups there are only that the bitch is pregnant or not. This is because too many vets are being sued by breeders becasue the vet didn't get the amount right Unfortunately this is the society we live in now. Tasha, yes you do get a picture & I have pictures of all my bitches during pregnancy. A nice keepsake.

Yes, usually the scan is done in 28th day from the 1st breeding and then you will see babies if the bitch is pregant. Two days earlier is also fine, we just did it yesterday and our Boogie confirmed in whelp on 26th day from A.I.! The ultrasound will not tell you exactly how many babies there are, especially if there are many of them. The exact number of puppies can be known few days before the labour if you do the X-ray of the bitch but again if you have over 10-12 pups it can be not possible to count all of them. Cheers Magda

www.petscanuk.co.uk/I had one of my girls scanned by Petscan, they come into your home and will scan the girl and tell you exactly how many puppies are inside, but it has to be on a certain day, I dont really remember the day but I seem to think it was 32 day. However the lady comes from Milton Keynes and she charges by the mile so to get to my house cost me about £100 in all. You can go to her and she will charge I think around £25 if you go to her. Maybe someone more locally will do this now, as a lot of people are going to people with sheep scanners who will do this for just a few pounds. If you post a message on champ dogs someone will probably be able to tell you of someone locally. I was even told someone does it close to me now only 11 miles away. The lady was very accurate she told me that we had 5 puppies, and a possible 6th but she could not make it out much. Their were 5 healthy pups born to Willow and the 6th had died a long time ago and not formed quite right inside. So the lady was spot on. Rachel

I am more than happy with my vet doing the scan it was more a case of how soon can it be done as I am impatient My scan is usually free too & I'm not interested in how many pups there are as long as if she is pregnant they are healthy. I am the worlds most unluckiest breeder I think so just for once would like things to run smoothly!

Claire Good Luck, I hope you have healthy puppies. My friend who has malamutes must be the unluckiest breeder as she has twice mated a bitch and she has not taken. She has had many tests and things done to see what the problem is. No luck. She then mated another bitch who she had scanned at 4 weeks and was told no puppies. (bearing in mind this bitch had had 2 previous healthy litters) Last week they took the bitch for a 4 mile walk, bitch semed tired and then she wasnt well so took back to vet who has scanned again and puppies due any day. They had been cutting her food down as she seemed to be putting a little weight on, but they didnt expect puppies as the vet couldnt see any. She must have been carrying them well up into her ribs.....lol

poor thing. I had bonnie scanned and my vet got me some lovely little pictures. I've never got further than the scan myself and they were always too blurry to really make out anything so I'm thrilled. In this one you can see the spine of the puppy in the middle going up the page and the circles at the bottom are different hearts In this one you can see the umbilical cord or tail at the bottom going up to the puppy not sure which
