Hi all, Just wondering if anyone can give me some information regarding importing a puppy to the USA. It will be a few years before I would consider doing this, but thought I would get some information early. I have no clue what would be involved. A few questions: What regulations are involved? Estimated total expense (puppy, air fare, fees???)? Can the tail be docked? (If I want to show the puppy it would have to be docked, if not an option maybe I'll choose another activity such as obedience.) In regards to breeding, what does some of your contracts stipulate? Since I will not be able to see the parents in person, would a breeder be willing to video the parents hunting? I would be looking for a strong hunting desire. My husband and I enjoy hunting with our weims very much and being part of our family a good temperament is very important to us. I would appreciate any guidance you all can give. Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Do you mean importing from the USA? I do not know where you are based but you would need to get in contact with your animal transport company where you live and they will give you all the details that are required for importing a puppy. If you are thinking of getting one from the US the puppy would have a docked tail as they are still docking in the US. I am sure a breeder would be only too happy to send lots of photos and if possible a video of the parents, I know I certainly do that. I have imported 2 dogs from the US and have had all the help I could possibly have had.
I suggest you select where you want to buy a puppy from and then set the wheels in motion and I am sure you will get all the help you need.

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone can give me some information regarding importing a puppy to the USA. It will be a few years before I would consider doing this, but thought I would get some information early. I have no clue what would be involved. A few questions: What regulations are involved? From our male there is a puppy exported to America. This was from The Netherlands. The puppies do not need an extra shot for the trip if they are under the age of 12 weeks. I don't know the costs for the flight of a puppy. And the price per puppy is not to say, depending where you want to buy a puppy. Every breeder / country has different prices. Also depending on which country you are thinking of. Here in the Netherlands there is a docking law and so there are in more countries. In Denmark for example there is no dockinglaw for the Weimaraner. Well that can be different by breeders as well. From the puppy which go to America from our male we wanted that the owner would come and pick up the puppy theirselves. And then took it back in the cabin. We are not sending puppies like it is a postpackage. But that is also personal. And the other side of picking up the puppy yourself is that you can see the mother of the puppies and if you maybe ask and the stud is not that far you also can see the father. The owner of the puppy of our male came theirselves and spend a few days here where she met the father and mother of her puppy. She spended a lot of time with us and the bitchowner. Well if we had a camera sure we would. And I think that it is no problem for many breeders. I hope you can find the parents and puppy you are looking for

Thanks for the info. We are in Michigan, USA. As I stated before, it would be a few years before we can do this. We currently live in the city and 2 dogs are plenty there. Until we have more room and pup will have to wait. I just wanted to find out some information so I would know if this is something we will be able to do in the future. I definitely know each breeder will be different with contracts and costs, etc. My current weims are 5 1/2 and 2 years, so I don't need to be any rush. It would be easier if I could find what we want here in the states.
If anyone by chance that lives in the US that has imported, could share their experience that would be great to hear.
Thanks again for sharing. Lisa

Since a couple of months, the pup has to have it's rabies shot before he's allowed to leave for the US and the shot has to be at least 3 weeks old. I'm sure someone would be able to help you Lisa. I'm pretty sure videoing wouldn't be an issue either. There are more than enough breeders on this board who have been exporting and importing pups, so they should be able to give you the information you need. Good luck!

Why importing in the USA. I would give it no priority if asked. I am also a member of the American Weimaraner Board and my impression is.... there are enough breeders in the USA and reading about the mass of Weims that have to be resqued. You can better stay in the country and pick your dog. It is much cheaper too. Just ask mr. Wetdog and he can help you to a wagonload of Weims.
