I'm looking for information on how to get a puppy from the US to France, in particular the rabies issue as I have gotten conflicting information about that. Thanks

Hello Anne, I am at the current of for the puppy. I know very very well the future owneress. She has already 2 dogs from my kennel for hunting and field-trials and I follow the evolution of the puppies every week on your website She called me this morning to ask some questions about it. You can email or phone to Christophe Oriou email : Brworu@aol.com or phone : 0033 6.81.98.71.82. He has imported Mojo Vini Vidi Vici from the States +/- 3 years ago. So he is at the current of all the papers and rules about it. From my experience, if the puppy come to the new country before the age of 3 months old, he must be in order for all the 1st vaccines but not yet rabbies because too young. If 3 months old or more, obliged to have the rabbies + the recall of vaccines thus normally after 3 months old, the puppies won't go in their new country before +/- 4 months old because of all the recall of vaccines. The rabbies can be given at the age of 3 months old without any problem. All my puppies are vaccined for the rabbies at 3 months old + kennel cough. I am very impatient to see the little Blue in reality. :-XA big pleasure in perspective. Eleonore Kennel des Brumes des Bois

Hi Eleanor!
I talked to Ali, Vini's breeder (also have discussed with Christophe a while ago) and she flew with him to France when Vini was 4 months old, so it was a different situation. I have been told, as you say, that if the puppy is young, then no rabies is required, and I hope that that is true!! I know another person that sent a field puppy to France and she says that this information is incorrect. I have heard too many stories of people getting wrong information and then at the airport, they cannot ship the puppy and I am worried about that sort of thing. I really don't want to give rabies so early if I don't have to!
Pups are going to have their first exposure to birds on Friday and then temperament and conformation evaluation on Saturday. :-)
Thanks! Anne

Hi again, maybe you can directly ask that information at the airport or at the ministry of agriculture. Don't you have in the States an official website that have all this needed information?
5 years ago, 2 puppies of mine went to Canada at 9 weeks old, only with export papers, 1st vaccines (no rabbies), paper from the vet + paper of the ministry of agriculture for the export to Canada, by plane. I think that Canada & the States have nearly the same rules, didn't it ?
and last year a friend of mine (a Frenchie) has imported a puppy from Sweden at 8 or 9 weeks old, without rabies. They have taken plane to Belgium and she did the rest in car with the puppy.
Concerning the export to France, lot's of my puppies are exported in that country only with the 1st vaccines, no rabbies required, only the pet passport.
Maybe somenone else have it experienced with a puppy from the States ?
If anyone can help Anne, please .....

I have an idea : a weimaraner breeder in Belgium is often importing puppies from the States and other countries. Maybe you can contact him and ask it to him : his name is Edwin Lenaerts www.weimaraners.be/contact.php#contact . The rules in France & Belgium are the same so if he can answer you will have your answer to France. hope that he can help you. Eleonore

Hi Anne,
I've looked on my vet book concerning pet exportation. It says that the puppy must have rabbies injection + rabbies certificate valid + good health certificate from a vet. So puppy would be 4 months old minimum.
But take more informations through persons who have import a puppy from US to France. It's always difficult to have the right rules who always change ! The person who imports this puppy could ask to the consulate....
Good luck !
Marie.
