Hi It seems ages since I last posted, forgot my password and everything so had to create a new account. So Hi its Rachel and how is everyone ? I dont always get chance to come on here, with everything that I have to do each day I rarely find time to get to the forum. I have been considering in the future to go out abroad to stud, taking a bitch from the UK to get her mated rather than AI. I would like to bring some new and interesting blood into my line. It is something I cant do yet, but I would seriously like to do this in the future. Does anyone have any advice they could give me to the pro's or con's of this. I look at some of the superb dogs in Australia, but that seems the end of the earth to go. How sucessful is artifical insemination ? I understand litter sizes are very small. If anyone has any advice, they can post to me or put a reply on here I would be really interested to read any ones experiences. Rachel @ www.silvestre-weimaraners.co.ukPs sorry if I have posted this in the wrong section.

Hi Rachel,
You can find in Europe some very good American and Australian dogs with very good pedigrees ,
So you don't have to fly so far......

Hi Rachel Welcome back At the moment, if you were to consider the AI route, you would need permission from the Kennel Club before proceeding. The potential stud dog must have sired a litter naturally before the application will even be considered. The application form is quite detailed and will probably answer some of your questions, it can be downloaded from the website here: www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/forms/Form_2.pdfIf you want to know about the technicalities of how the semen is stored/inserted/success rate then I would advise you contact the Kennel Club to obtain contacts for AI specialists so you can speak to them direct (PM me if you want some contacts). Some vets knock the bitch out, as I believe there is a higher success rate with this method. Having said that, I am not a vet , and I would advise you speak to an AI specialist about the procedures available now. Some vets will also advise that the bitch should have already whelped a litter before proceeding with AI. If you do decide to import semen then you will need an import licence from DEFRA. If you are certain you are going ahead, apply well in advance - they can take a while to respond. ;D The whole AI procedure can work out costly. Personally, if there were a dog in mainland Europe that I wanted to use then I would travel over to use the dog and do the mating naturally. I think, living in the UK, we are very lucky to have such open routes to Europe with a lot of nice bloodlines practically on our doorstep. With dogs further afield, and indeed, dogs no longer with us but with semen in storage, then AI is the way to go.

Also, the litter size is determined by the number of ova released by the female---it is not dependent the male's side.
I have not heard of AI's being routinely smaller litter size--but I'm not highly experienced with it. If there is something I don't know about--I'd like to hear comments, that would be good to know in the future.
And WELCOME BACK Rachel, nice to have you drop in again.

Hi thanks for your replies. Sorry I have not back sooner. Their are simply not enough hours in my day at the moment. I am sure you all know what I mean.
Thanks to Daniella for such a detailed reply. Thats interesting to read that they suggest a bitch having one litter naturally first before AI. The bitch I have in mind I would probably try this on her second litter. She is a super bitch, and I just fancy doing something competely different for a change!
I keep looking at sites across the world, found a nice one in New Zealand which has some nice looking dogs, but of course when you dont know what health problems are laying behind we could go and bring in something we wished we had not of done. So its finding people to talk too, and what a good place to start as here on the European forum.
I suppose we also have to find a dog that ties in with our line in shape, as if its too extreme then the judges wont like it here. If that makes sense. I used to be friends with someone that had an American champion, but a lot of UK judges thought he was too different in type to English type.
Daniella do you know if we can take dogs out of the UK to somewhere like Australia or New ZEaland and take a bitch in season out and get her mated and then come back in again.
Dont worry expense is not really on my mind as surely if I am going to do this properly we are going out to get a new line in and then its worth every penny ?
Also thanks to all the other comments about our website. I just updated it a couple of weeks ago to include our Hungarian Vizsla who is new to our home. Her name is Scarlett and a real tear away. My daughter Abbie hopes to handle her at some open shows locally when she is old enough. I will try to put some new photos in the site in about August time so come back and have a look again then.
Anyway take care all Rachel

Shouldn't be a problem providing your bitch has a passport. Many people travel with bitches overseas to have them mated. I know what you are saying. It's all subjective really though isn't it? You just have to go for what you like, regardless of what others may think.
