Phew! The two So Cal field trials are finally over! Had 2 back-to-back weekends of dogs, sunshine and a lot of fun. The Orange Coast trial preceded the Vizsla Nationals near Bakersfield, so we attracted 115 entries and ran 3 days of dogs. The Southland trial was a more reasonable 80 dogs. Each trial had dogs finishing their championship points, Luna at Orange Coast and Sport at Southland.

We came home with 2 second place ribbons for each of our older dogs. Riley had an excellent 30 minutes in Amateur Gun Dog; David came back to camp with a big smile on his face, but he was edged out of the placement by the worthy Shasta at the Orange Coast trial. I worked up the courage to handle Indy in Amateur Gun Dog at the Southland trial and took a 2nd. In my nervousness and haste in getting my horse and blank pistol from the handler in the previous brace, I forgot my blank pistol. I didn't even realize it until I was all done and taking off an empty holster. duh, I'm surprised I didn't foget the horse! It was pure luck that Indy didn't find any backcourse birds with that nose of hers. I was so worried that I'd have one of those crazy birdfield moments (visions of running birds, me tripping, gunner missing bird after bird, etc., running through my head...), but it was a find in 1 minute, bird was right there, bird flew, gunner hit, Indy sent and all in order.

Having not had chance to go hunting since the season had opened, David couldn't stand it anymore and went hunting with the dogs between the 2 trials. Pixy had her first bird shot over her; she thought it was the coolest and pranced around with it. She was starting to run at 200-400 yards and didn't want to get back in the truck to go home. Exuberant Riley was a little crazy, as is usual his first day of hunting wild (Riley sez "REAL") birds, and stole a retrieve from Indy. Good girl stood through it like a trooper, then got her own later. We're done with field trials for the year for the most part, and this will be the first year in a while that Riley is not going on his annual trip to Texas and the Nationals.

The dogs will be out hunting!

It was a tough 2 weekends running so many dogs. As you know Fred, sometimes it's hard to get enough help at these events and we were running 2 concurrent courses. I also was doing all the food! But if someone doesn't run these events, then they won't happen. We are actually pretty lucky to have 8 Weim trials a year in California, I know in some states interest has waned to the point of dropping these events -- and I certainly hate to see that happening!
