Rescue numbers are creeping up again.
I have now got 8 to rehome, including a 13 week old puppy. 8 month old puppy both from the same sire (different dams).

Oh dear.........
What is the protocol when a dog comes in for rescue - do you have to notify the breeder and stud dog owner?

That's what interests me too as here in Slovenija we have only a couple weimaraners and luckily they all have good owners (as far as I know) so there is no need to have such a"rescue club" here. How is in England, are there many homeless weims and how did that happen? Are there many litters without pedigree-s? Or is just the problem that people can not keep them anymore as they are intractable? A very sad thing Nina

Nina, unfortunately we are in a throw away society & that includes the dog too. There are many [far too many] 'breeders' who are in it purely for the money & if there is a problem with any of their puppies at any time, they just do not want to know so that is where breed rescue comes in to play.

That is terrible and that is the thing I'm so afraid of. Hopefully here are still not so many people who want this dog as the breed is not so well known but the ones who know it they read a lot about it and they take the dog aware of how many time they will need for the dog and that is exactly what such a dog needs. I'm afraid that some people (if the breeders won't give enough attention to whom they sell the puppy) will take it just of their amazing look and they will be so numerous as for example labrador retrievers...are here. But it is a great difference of owning this two breeds so it comes to that that at the end they will be thrown away as you said weima. I cross fingers that will never happen and me as maybe? a future breeder will give as much attention to futere puppy owners as I will have to so the dogs will have proper homes. I still hope and believe you will find good foster homes for you rescued weims.

I would like to see in the UK like other countries have whereby you cannot breed form a dog or bitch until it has had it's health tests & proved itself in a discipline be it showing, working, agility etc. That way i think it may stop some of the back street breeders & in time have less rescue dogs.

Would it stop the puppy farmers though and the uneducated buying pups off them. My girl is a result of a puppy farm, sold through a pet shop. Greatfully she was loved and cared for but she was still given up for adoption at the age of 5.

Playing Devils Advocate ONLY:
you'd get alot of people who work their dogs but don't compete complaining about that especially with working breeds like the gun dogs,. not everyone wants to compete and the genuine hunting community certainly don't want to show be it this breed or another.
As these requirements are restricted only to working dogs the KC would given the number of dogs that they have to process find it difficult to make sure all litters were from Champion, Sh Champion or FT Champion stock - also run the risk of damage to breeds through reduction of the gene pool.
I'd like to see them all have a certificate but it should be based on a fairer system than we currently have available.

So, as I understood you don't have any (?) particular certificates to breed in UK. Or you do actually have to have some? Here in Slovenija breeding of such a dog is not really a very easy task as you have to have the body mark (I'm not sure this is how it is spelled in English), hips scored and HZP (autumn hunting trial). Expecially the last one is a hard task in case you are not a hunter. Tell me please what are the procedures in UK?

Rescue when contacted by either an owner looking to rehome their weim or a potential owner looking for a weim to adopt. Both are assessed by WCGB members. If the dog to be rehomed has a pedigree/KC registration papers and is known to have been bred by (or sired by) someone well known then tha person is contacted. I personally will contact a breeder or stud dog owner if I know them. The rules state that we will contact the breeder/stud dog owner if they are club members. 99% of the dogs we rehome are not bred by club members.
Probably 50% of the dogs rehomed are bred by well know puppy farms or people who have litter after litter after litter from their bitch. The other 50% are from people who "just wanted to have a litter from their pet" cant or wont take the dog back because they dont have the room.
Once a dog has been assessed release papers are signed by the owners signing the dog over to the WCGB Rescue. We then match the dog to the home. Most dogs go from their original home into the new home.
Nina, there are no rules regarding breeding here in the UK. anyone with a dog can have a litter and provided that the sire and dam are KC registered then the puppies can be too. Someone has set up an alternative registration scheme here called the Dog Lovers Registration Scheme and anyone can "register" any dog with these people. I could take any crossbreed dog off the street and register it as a weim and then register the litter. It isnt worth the paper it is written on but majority of the general public dont know this and buy the puppy as "registered" and they think that means KC registered. There is someone in Leeds that breeds their bitch at every season, registers one litter with the KC and the other with the DLRS.
