New Member here... My husband and I are Americans living in Sicily Italy. We're the proud new owners of Anastasia (Ana) a 2 year old abandoned albino Weim. She is extremely emaciated but has a very healthy appetite and calm disposition. She is blind in her right eye due to over exposure in the miserable Sicilian August heat. She has a professionally docked tail and has possibly had a litter in the last year. I suspect she is in the first stages of heat as we speak. We believe that she was breed b/c of her albino anomaly then abandoned after having a standard litter, as a Weim in Sicily is very rare indeed let alone an albino Weim.
Based on her health cert from the Vet she is a Leish carrier. We will be starting the treatment phase with her to protect ourselves and other dog "Jack". I have questions about the Weim breed and about the proper way to care for a rescued Weim. Also, as I've only ever cared for males dogs any information having a female would be great as well. Any help I can get through this forum will be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance- Meagan and Ana

Hi Meagan and welcome to you and Ana. Don't some people just make you sick dumping a girl for not producing something that was going to make them a lot of money. Shame on them.
If you can get Bach Flower Remedies out where you are I would start to give her Walnut for the changes in her life and Star of Bethlehem for the trauma she has been through. Failing that some Rescue Remedy would help.
I hope you will find the necessary help on here so ask away. I am sure Ana has landed on her feet now and will appreciate the haven you are offering her.
Bless you......

Thanks for the responses!! Anyone have rescue tips and tricks they can provide?? Specifically, whats the best foods to feed in her condition?? How to work obedience training with a 2 year old dog. What can I expect from a female dog in heat around a fixed male dog? Is it safe to have her spayed at this age? Any Weim traits I should know about?? We've already experience a slight problem with seperation anxiety but shes doing well with a kennel and has attached herself to a favorite playtoy that doesnt leave her sight.
Any hints, tips or tricks are welcome...

Wow, what a beautiful dog! Where about's in Sicily are you? My Mum lives in Tusa. I'm German living in Australia and I haven't got a Weim yet but hoping to get a puppy in December. Enjoy this forum, there're some amazing people on here. And I hope to see heaps more pics of your little beauty!
You should be fine with Obedience training but you have to be consistent. There shouldn't be any problems with a female on heat and a neutered dog - maybe just a few 'games'. I would get her sprayed asap after her heat.
With SA: as she has been dumped, she might just be afraid. Make her time alone pleasant for her and once she's bonded with your other dog, it should be fine.

Seem to have lost the first message while trying to find Ivory's pic of wearing her doggles... so welcome, again, and if you provide her a routine, lessen her stress while exercising her and feed her well, she'll soon heal mentally and physically. I didn't know anything about her sand fly lesions, etc., so looked online so seems you'll need her to see a vet. I would try baking soda in warm water soaks for her lesions. Here's my brother's rescue wearing her doggles (I sugested he protect her vision w/the doggles): home.blarg.net/~scottyb/

Thanks so much for the warm welcome!! Ana is doing great.. she and our other pup have bonded and are now fast friends!! She continues to put on lbs and slowly the signs of neglect are fading away!! greyghost: I was completely heartbroken for her when we found her. She's a gem and I just can't imagine the horror she's faced these last few months!! It seems that I can't ship the Bach's remedies to Sicily I'll deffinitly take another other reccomendations you might have!!! Thanks in advance!! oceanaussi: We live near Catania... Central east coast with Mt. Etna at our doorstep!! We spoke to our vet and she recommends that we spay her in January... which is understandable based on her circumstances. I'll gather some new photos this weekend an work on putting a banner together!! Cheryl: Luckily Ana is not showing outward signs of Leishmaniasis. So thanksfully no lesions on her skin!! We have her on treatments for the disease which will take one shot a day for 40 days then one pill a day for the rest of her life. I guess a small price to pay for her to be in our family with all the love she can handle!! Thanks for the information on the Doggles something I'll have to consider as she already has exposure damage Greatful for all the support!! Ciao for now...

Honey and chamomile are relaxers and probably available. If you look online, there should be a recipe to make your own tincture, too. You wouldn't need Bach's then, just make your own:) I used to give my eldest daughter a cup of chamomile tea w/honey each evening during high school as she had insomnia. This summer I made a sleep syrup and also a sleep tincture for her out of our wild chamomile, valerian, and lousewort/figwort which could be a relaxer in small amounts. Good to hear Ana's not a bumpy and scabby as my Slade used to be from his seasonal and food allergies. I took corn out of his diet and added honey from Fairbanks, Delta Junction (Alaska) or Canadian honey which rid him of symptoms then I had his thyroid checked and he's begun meds. A good sun block would do Ana some good, too. Just make sure she doesn't lick it off, or take her out as little as possible in the brightest or hottest times. Exercise can be accomplished by swimming, too (water proof sun block). (My 1st ex is half Italian, he and our 3 sons are excellent cooks, love them and that food! Pastafazole! Madalia D'oro! Capeeshe? - and my teasing Irish/German response: YaVole! LOL, MMMmm!

she is a wonderfull and beautifull dog!!! we had a thread just last week on albino weims seems that they are not fond of by some breeders at all...it saddens me to think of what some do with the little loves.
i use lavender oil a drop of two on a bandana or bed to relax my two girls, to bad you can't get the flower remidies, they are very effective.
wellcome and hurray for you to take on the lady and give her a love filled home
