Monday was my first day picking up this season. I had a great day. I think my boy has been reading the manual over the summer! We are quite novice when it comes to picking up as I only started at the end of last season. However, all my worries were lifted when I saw my boy in action. He seemed to know exactly how to deal with different situations. Last year, he was a bit unsure of wounded game and so Ihave kept him off it. However, when you are picking up in a field on your own, there is no one else to say to" can you get that one please" so we just had to do it. Glad to say that all the birds were brought back to me still alive so unfortunately for me, I had to despatch them. I sent him for a dead duck and as he approached it, he sniffed it and carried on. I was going to get annoyed and thought what is he playing at, when he moved forward and there was a runner in front. He picked this one first bringing it to me before going back for the dead one. On one field, I saw a runner heading off in the distance. It stopped, it had been winged. I watched my boy tracking it and as he got closer to it, the bird (it was a cock bird) put both its wings forward like it was going to fight. I was horrified, imagining that it would fly up and spur him in the face. Well, my boy kind of held it on point first and then nipped round behind it and picked up from the back. He then presented it to me. I was so proud of him. A good day all in all! Have to wait a fortnight now for the next one!
