Since I moved 3 weeks ago, my dogs have game on every walk they make. Usually twice a day that is. The area where we now live is great for training a dog for field trials.
Anyway, I was training yesterday with a friend who's doing a test in 3 weeks time. It was a bit too hot and the dogs didn't really run how I'd like to see.
Billy made up for that though. We were about to go back to the car, but I decided to run him one more time. We hadn't had game yet, so it was worth the try.
I let him off lead (the other dog was running as well btw) and he started hunting straight away.
He suddenly had "something in his nose" and made an attack with his nose up in the air. Unfortunately whatever it was, was on the other side of the water, so I sent him over. On the other side he went on making that attack. Nose up in the air and straight forward to where the scent came from. And suddenly, after an attack of more than 25 mtr's, he was on point.
I couldn't get across the water so I made him put up the game with my voice which he did thank goodness. Off they went, 2 partridges.
I had goosebumps after seeing that. He's only 16 months old, doesn't really want to run, but the points he makes.... phenomenal!!!!!!!!!!!
He came back and went on hunting quite well actually and then he was on point again. A little pheasant hen with a small one.
That was a great point as well.
Off he went again and then he went on point again. He's usually very steady, so I got the other inexperienced dog to back him up. That was great to see, 2 LH's on point, respecting each others point.
I let Billy flush the bird and it was another partridge. This one had a nest obviously, coz she took off flying weird, not far from the dogs and making all this noise. The dogs went ballistic and chased it out of sight, hehehe. This is so good for dogs their age. Success is the keyword.
Of course they're not fast and clever enough to ever catch a bird this way, but they came back with a huge grin on their faces (am sure about this )!!!!!
What a fantastic ending of yet another training in great fields!
