This has been on the news today and someone has posted this link on another forum - so I thought I'd share with you guys...... news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4593794.stmTo view a video clip of a UK Weimaraner breeder defending docking, look to the right of the picture of a boxer - there is a video link. (modified this bit to highlight where clip was). There is a lot of debate about docking at the moment as our government pushes yet another act thru that is disguised as an animal welfare bill but it has a few things tucked away in it - such as docking. I've had both docked and undocked breeds side by side for many years. Personally, I've never seen anything of the horror stories related by the non docking proponents. With so many things going on in the world of a truly bad nature, it seems a little unnecessary to me to make such a big issue out of such a small thing to me. Why not put all the effort into rescue-or closing puppymills with squalid abusive conditions---I could find it much easier to support those types of efforts.

I have docked and undocked weims. One of my weims (a rescue) still has his due claws on as well as a great long tail and he has to be the clumsiest dog I have ever met, but he has not had any trauma to either his tail or his claws despite crashing around in the undergrowth on a regular basis. He always seems to rip his ears! And boy do they bleed!

Nina, What's the latest on the U.K. animal welfare bill that is going through the U.K. parliament? Anymore current information? We are all waiting in Australia to hear the final outcome to see if it is going to affect us any further. Many thanks. Liz.

Liz, this is waiting now to go before the House of Lords. They are the last chance to stop this going through. I tackled my MP about it and he asked the guy who has pushed this bill through to write to me, and he basically sounds like a nut who has used his position as MP to push this through. I am extrememly worried about the way this is written though, as it looks like we can't even legally OWN a docked dog from another country after the implementation of this bill - it is just written so badly it is difficult to understand how far reaching this will be.

So it would be similar to the Swiss law where they cant even import a docked dog. We have a Bill in parliament waiting resurrection right now, possibly like Australia waiting on the UK decision. Cyd New Zealand

Hi Nina, Thanks for that. That's what we are all worrying about here, if the U.K. bans owning a dog with a docked tail, we will definitely have the do-gooders pushing for that to happen here. I notice that there are states in the U.S. trying to implement a ban on tail docking, I think that is correct from what I have read on another list - Anne has been watching this in the U.S. I think. I saw a Weimaraner puppy being walked yesterday and I had to look twice because it had such a fine head and such a funny tail set it looked like a big whippet. Good luck Nina. Liz

Two of my rescues have had undocked tails. Groovy did get some type of infection on the end of his tail as a pup and the vet had to remove more of it, but that's the only problem I have had. Whatever weims I rescue in the future, whatever tail they have is the tail they're gonna keep - it's like a skinny whip, I adore it!

I just wish that the people trying to stop the import of docked dogs would understand how their decisions are going to affect the genepools of the 'affected' breeds. I would love to import again in the future, and to have some twit tell me I can't import a dog that has been legally docked in it's country of origin is a farce.
Whatever the legislation, all I would ask is that they at least consult properly on the implications of the whole thing before they implement it.

Is that in the Bill link I sent Nina? I didn't see that. Hmm. I cannot see how that can be so. It's wouldn't be illegal to own a docked breed, just illegal to show it, so I cannot understand why it would be illegal to import a docked breed providing you don't show it.

Daniela I truly hope so - I really do, but some of that bill does not make much sense at all.........
Just hope common sense prevails tomorrow Nina

Ahh, but we know the problem with sense, Nina. It's not common.
