hi i found the forum to day and thought id join I'm from just outside the lake district in cumbria and have a 8 month old male weimaraner called Charlie. hes our first pup and first weim and boy was it a wake up call even thou we done our research. hes a typical mischievous weim getting into bits of trouble like eating 2 chocolate cakes! he's very friendly and loves being petted but his worst habit has got to be poop eating everything in sight! but we adore him.

Don't you feed him then LOL. Welcome to the board. We had a Weim for our first dog (11 years ago). Yes it was a real shock to the system but we have come a long way and are now on our second, a rescue, called Holly who is now 7. We have had her just over 2 years. You might try putting some pineapple in his diet to see if that stops him eating poop. Alternatively teach him a good 'leave it'. You can't just say the words and expect them to know what they mean. www.loveyourdog.com/touch.html Here is just one example of teaching a leave it. There are many more similar ones, this is just the first one of the first ones I came across which is effective. Have you heard of clicker training? Whilst your pup's bones are still fusing he should not be doing loads of exercise (rule of thumb 5mins walk for every month of his life until he is 15/18 months old). Clicker training or any games making them use their minds wear them out and help to build up a relationship with you. Have fun!!!!!

You might try putting some pineapple in his diet to see if that stops we feed him but he constantly seems hungry! we've changed is food to Arden grange but no matter what he eats he's always seems hungry we've tried pineapple for a few months to no effect we're working on leave hopefully it will work! eating it only makes him very ill with bowel and stomach infections we've go to get him to stop

I symathise. Holly ate hers on a couple of occasions and was really ill. You may have to think about muzzeling him for his own safety. A Baskerville muzzle is one of the better ones I believe, make sure you get a good fit. Introduce him to it gradually and maybe during his walk so his mind is on other things. Once on don't give in to his antics just try and take his mind off it. He will soon get used to it, says she who has never had to use one. When I first got Holly I put a halti on her because she pulled like a train. I am so glad I stuck out the first 10 minutes as she soon calmed down. We don't have to wear one now as "Auntie Mar" sorted her out when she came over to stay. How many meals a day is he on now? He looks good

IME dogs usually grow out of eating faeces. All mine have done it & all have grown out of it.
He will be hungry all the time as he is a growing lad so within reason let him eat as much as he wants to.

he's on 2 meals a day roughly 200gms (2 cups) each meal and treats vet said he was perfect weight and now he was neutered to be careful as he would put weight on easily (slower metabolism) he been doing this since 3 months old we use a basket muzzle which he doesn't mind but he still sticks the muzzle in it and you can imagine what a mess! we love him to bits but it very frustrating at the mo we're using deter tablets to hopefully stop him eating his own and when out on walks he's muzzled with work on leave it only other thing is to ride it out and hope he grows out of it very quickly. i feel sorry for him some times having to wear the muzzle because everyone always thinks he's vicious and thats far from the truth he's the softest sweetest thing. if people would pick up after their dogs it would be easier

Charlie looks gorgeous!
How does the pineapple thing work then - Max is inclined to have a go at cat poo and horse poo, but not his own, thankfully.
At what age did you have him neutered?

We discussed the pineapple thing recently on this forum: www.weimaranerworld.co.uk/ look under Welcome and Tough Love. Sorry can't post the link on that forum.

Why? ? He was not listning? ?? Or he was ill? ? Poor boy!!!!! I have for 25 years weimaraners and German shorthair pointer. They all were mail dogs. None of them was neutered and some times I had four maildogs at the same time. Why did you let your weimieboy neutered so young? ??

Sad to say new owners get so much advice thrown at them and they don't always know which way to turn. It's done now so no point crying over spilt milk.

It's done now so no point crying over spilt milk. thanks this was very true in our case vet saying 6 months weim owners saying don't or wait until 16-18 months all with valid reasons for their side of the argument our decision was based on a number of reasons one of which was Charlie had managed to escape up nearby fields after a bitch in season twice i couldn't let it happen again the risk of loosing my baby under a car was not an option.

Welcome, Cheeky Charlie, I love bad boys;) and welcome to his human family, too!
My Boris, Ina's Grandson and her Bacchus' grandson;) is the only one of mine Not fixed and he is young enough this Spring that he thinks the neighbor's two old mixed mutt ladies are very interesting and also my spayed 4 yr old sh weim, too! LOL
I don't plan to fix him or mate him as of yet, but I have to be extra responsible, too...and he tries to be extra smart at outwitting me...so far, I'm winning and its a fun dance thru life;)
(Auntie Mar may have to become "travelling Auntie Mar" to straighten out some of us...)

Thanks for the link on pineapple.
Max is 9 months now, and we're intending to have him neutered, but want to wait until the right age - I'm guessing there might be a conversation or 2 on this subject somewhere!

Hello from Rachel and all her dogs. Cumbria is a beautiful part of the Uk, we spend a lot of time up in the Lake District around the mountains. Love walking, and the dogs just think its great up on the fells.
