Reading the article about Arbat, got me to wondering if Microchips are available there, or Australia/New Zealand and other places. Are there difficulties or limitations due to national borders? Are they accepted and well known? All my dogs are microchipped--how many of the rest of you have your dogs microchipped?

Fred In our country all pedigree dogs are chipped, think for about four/five years now. And before that, all were tatoeed since 1976.

Hi Fred Rookie was chipped with a Home Again Microchip before he set sail for New Zealand. Sadly it is unreadable by the scanners used here. Waste of time and money huh.

I don't know of any reason he couldn't be rechipped. There would be no more risk of a problem than if he had none. My vet checks the chips by scanner when they go in for vaccinations, and if there were a problem with it reading, he'd simply insert another chip.

Hi, In Portugal, since 2002, I think, all pedigree dogs must be chiped also. All our dogs are chiped and also the puppies that leave our house are microchiped before they go. a few years ago, tatoo's were also accepted by our kennel club but now only chips.

Hi, I know of dogs chipped and the chips have either moved or cant be read by the scanners. In the ones that have moved I know a few that have had to be operated on to remove chips from shoulders and other joints. None of my 6 weims are chipped.

I have my dogs tattood, I will not have them chipped as I do not wish to introduce a foreign body into my dog. Chips move, cease to work and not all scanners read all chips.
There have been several cases where dogs have been unable to re enter their country of origin due to this problem.

Lynn--are those problems recent? There were some problems with migration when chips first came out about ten years ago, but the generation that is used now have pretty much eliminated those problems.

But not completely Fred. The microchip from Daan is just under her jaw and the microship of a friends dog, is in between the shoulder blades (could be due to lady who did the job). Although they tend not to move, they still do incidentally. In the 12 years I'm a vet nurse now, I've only seen one major problem with a microchip (chip not working) and a couple of microchips moved, but only a bit. I think the microchip is the best, kindest and most accurate way of indentifying an animal. And it's the future!!

I am not against the micro-chip, but I will not chip my dogs or puppies. I use a tattoo in the inner right ear. I have a friend that has Labradors and he used to micro-chip his pups until one time the chip moved all the way into the hip joints and caused all kinds of problems. If I purchase a dog that has a micro-chip, I will go ahead and tattoo them when they get here and then forget that they are chipped. I agree with SmokeyBear in saying that any foreign object inserted into the body can have its good points and its bad. I tend to lean more toward "it has more bad points than good". Melissa

All our Weims are microchipped. We do it ourself. We have checked over the last few years and not one of the micochips have migrated. Therefore, we made a decision to go ahead and do microchipping for a number of reasons. Primarily we were chipping prior to Penn Hip or OFA. Everyone thing has pros and cons but this works for us. Then we posted a sign on our fence that says all of our Weims a protected by AVID. Who knows it may deter someone who thinks they will get a Weim for free. Anyhow, so far we are happy with our decision. We do not chip puppies, but we could if we received a request. I think like many things this is personal preference and there is no right or wrong decision. Shela
