My partner is a police officer and searching for lost people in the bush take up a lot of his time. We decided to try to train Quentin and he had his assessment to become a SAR (search & rescue) dog.
Ok, this is what Quen had to do:
1. Temperatment Test
1.1. Behaviour of the dog amonngst humans
1.2. Behaviour of the dog amongst other dogs
2. Obedience
2.1. of-lead walking with turns
2.2. Forward with an emergency 'down'
2.3. Drop - Stay with distractions
2.4. Send dog to a platform and follow command (sit, drop, stand)
3. Agility: stairs, different ground covers, over swinging bridge, drums, tunnel, walking over uncomfortable areas
4. Scent & Search
4.1. find object via scent and bark when found
4.2. find 2 victims and bark
The temperament test is the most important part, if the dog fails that, he's gone which is understandable. Quen had absolutly no probs there.
2.1 wasn't too bad, he walked a bit faster than me and I had to call him back a few times
2.2. wasn't a problem but I haven't tought him the 'down' yet, just the 'drop', so we did it with a 'drop' and that was ok.
2.3. was hard. Other people around him and noises weren't a problem but then we had 5 dogs and Quentin decided he didn't want to stay anymore.
2.4. wasn't to bad but Quen didn't quite get the palatform thing. Most of the time he followed the command without being on the platform.
3. a few were goo, but some he didn't want to walk over
4. not a problem at all - I was a bit worried he wouldn't bark when he finds the object/vicitim. I just tought him to bark on command. But it worked!
He will have to do the test again later on with a bit tighter rules and points. This was just to see how he reacts and if he might be capable of doing this. So we have to do a lot more training over the next few months! But I look forward to it! It was really interesting! I'm in the SES (State Emergency Service) so I've been to a few searches and disasters. I would be great if Quentin could help to save somebodys life! I'm very proud of him!
