Hi all, long time no speak. My friends male Weim is about 15 months old, and recently he started to gnaw at his paws, making them very sore. The vet gave treatment, but the condition stayed the same. my friend has just been on holiday, leaving her Weim with a local friend, and lo and behold, the condition disappeared.... When my friend returned home with her dog, the condition came straight back. Oscer is now gnawing at his paws so much, they are very sore and bleeding. I wondered if anyone has any ideas for her, I know she has decking in the garden, and also a lawn, I asked her if she uses any carpet treatments that might irritate Oscers paws and she doesnt. Could it be diet, grass seeds, or what....We are confused Thanks all

Hello, according to me, it can be diet. My Grzanka did the same as a puppy. As soon as I changed the 'dry food', the gnawing stopped. Maybe he ate something different during your friend's holiday? That can be the matter of one product which makes him allergic.

If he stopped doing it while they where on holidays, it must be either stress or an allergy for something in the house. Foodallergy is not likely, since I assume he had the same food while he was away???

If he is chewing at the bottom of his pads it sounds like a contact allergy. There is a ground cover plant called 'Wandering Dew' www.naturespic.co.nz/i/4812pw01_w.jpg that can cause highly allergic reactions in dogs. Lois

It could be the gras or the carpet. For many years ago i had a German Shorthair pointer, who did the same. He had an allergic problem for grasses, dust etc. He ate the bottom of his paws totally of. I tried very much treatments but nothing helped. Only kept him away from the stuff where he was allergic for. It's an awfull thing "allergics". I hope you can find the difference between your home and the one on the vacation adress. Strow it away and your dog will be okee again. Succes, Ina

You better watch out for allergies. Itchy paws with no known reasons are likely to be allergies.
