This is a topic that I looked up for a discussion on another board and I thought you all might enjoy seeing it. Jim was a real dog, and the stories are true. My mother told of many times of seeing Jim when she was a girl. My grandfather used to hunt with Mr. Van Arsdale.

The Van Arsdale Hotel is gone now, but there is a small park and memorial to Jim on the spot where it stood in Marshall, MO.
The story of Old Drum is also true, it is the origin of the phrase "Man's Best Friend". There is a statue of Old Drum in front of the courthouse where the trial took place in Warrensburg, MO.
