We were walking in Tervuren woods today, and as we came out by the lakes, I was ahead, and the girls were rootling in the undergrowth. I saw a bike approaching, so turned round to call Izzy to heel. ... She was trotting towards me, pleased as punch, with a rabbit in her mouth (holding it behind the shoulders) I told her to "Drop" - but didn't hold out my hands. She laid it on the ground at my feet. It looked a little manky, but no bleeding or broken fur. The eyes were crusty and half-closed, so I suspected myximitosis (sp?). I told her to "leave it", whilst I looked around for a stick to dispatch the rabbit. Instead, it stood up, and bunny-hopped towards the lake!! Izzy wanted to go and bring it back, but she didn't break free, and instead sat and watched its progress... So, today I've learned: Izzy tracks, finds, will hold fur, will hold warm fur, will retrieve, will drop, and will restrain herself from a chase. She does not stop her "retrieve" to shake or play with the object. Above all, she has such a gentle mouth that a retrieved animal is unharmed (and un-slobbered!!).
