Just another puppy question – my friend’s pups out here are now 13 weeks and the last one will go today. Her own little bitch appears to have had an accident and knocked her head about 1 week ago. She had a big lump coming up at the occipital point and when she took her to the vet he drained the fluid off. Result is that she now has a very hard swelling of the size of an egg on the top of her head. The vet just said that this will go down in 3-4 weeks. The swelling looks really huge to me and Sheila is a bit worried, as she is going back to the UK for 5 days this coming week and does not want to leave her husband with a potential problem. I have never experienced this quite to that extend – does anyone know anything about that? Should she take her to another vet (mine for example) for a second opinion? Mar, I am sure you would know the answer?

If she is worried then she should take her to another vet, or go for a check up at her own vet. There's no point in her travelling and being worried the whole trip. Better to go for a check up than to regret not going later.

I think the vet is right. This is just a reaction to the swelling and the draining. It should go down but there might be a little scar tissue afterwards which could possibly remain visible.

Thanks - I have past on the information and hope that the pup will be fine. She is a bit wild and always into trouble at the moment, so no surprise that she had hurt herself in the first place :-(

I have seen this a couple of times. My girl Brooke hit her head and her occiput was huge it looked like an egg, and it was hard like bone. It just went down on its own, but it took probably 3 months to go away completely, now you would never know. Hope this helps. Rachel
