My name is Irena and I live in Riga, Latvia. I first read about the Weimaraner in a book on dog breeds that didn't even have a picture of a Weimaraner. I liked the statement that it is a beautiful dog that can ALSO work and is even used by the police in the States. At that time I had a German Shepherd mix and we competed in different "working rings" and travelled to shows as far as Moscow (1994), performed at dog shows with our little group of enthusiasts, as well as performed at schools and kindergartens actively. That was in 1993-1996.
However the grey ghosts kept me thinking about them, even though I knew there were none in our country. Literature was very scarce and mostly I`d find short descriptions of the breed, and I was not using the Internet at that time yet.
Then in 2000 I got to go to the European Dog Show in Poznan, Poland. The main reason I went was to finally see the Weimaraner - and I did!!!!!! I could not sleep the night before their day, and was absolutely stunned when I got to the hall where their ring was. I got to meet quite a few then, mostly from Poland, and I of course had no idea that I would be meeting some of the owners at that show again some day, and the dogs' names and owners' surnames in the catalogue will not be strangers some day not too far away!
Then I got on the Internet and started searching for more information. I came across a Weimaraner fanciers message board and joined it. I was kindly greeted by the few members that were already there - that was in August 2001. I started posting my questions and got some nice replies. Little did I know that I would meet so many nice Weimaraner people from all over the world soon as the message board would start growing, and the least of all did I expect to find the best friend and the love of my life in one of the members in another part of the world who was the first one to greet me on the board back in 2001. That did not happen overnight though, but we all had a wonderful time talking about Weimaraners. Meanwhile I travelled occasionally, meeting more Weims and their owners in person (some from the board!) in other countries. Wonderful friendships were started at that time.
I could not however dream of getting a Weim for myself because I was too busy with two jobs and full time studies at university then.
A lot has happened in these few years, and now the timing finally seems perfect - if anything can ever be perfect at all! I am still busy, this time hoping to finish my Master's degree in Linguistics, and after two visits in person with my best friend, Fred in Kansas City, Missouri, owner of two gorgeous German Shepherds and OF COURSE a Weimaraner ;D , we can start working on getting together. And we're getting a puppy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And better yet, it is arranged by someone from that same message board where we all met 3 years ago. Some things in life are just amazing, and it is hard to believe how your world can change in such a wonderful way just because you like a pretty grey dog. Weims are one of the most wonderful things in my life, and I owe a lot to them.
