Hi all, What is the best age for a small puppy to fly as cargo? I can transport a pup between 8 and 11 weeks or after 16 weeks. What do you advise?
The puppy will be home bred, so no fear about right socialization at the breeder's.

Hi,
When their 8 wks you should still be able to bring them as handlugage with you in the cabin, so that's what I advice you to do for a puppy.

there is a maximum dog weight to travel with you in the cabin, you should inform with the respective airline to know. Its between 6 and 9 kilograms as far as I know.
Good luck!

...and this weight includes cage so even 8 wks old baby with cage would be over 9kg ...I think
Iza, is the puppy going to travel directly to Poland?

Instead of crate also a textile crate/bag (kind of thing) is allowed so this hardly does add up to the weight. Don't now about you guys but a weim puppy from 8 kg's at 8 wks is quite huge i'd say But ofcourse possible:-) Anyway I assumed it would be overseas from outside Europe. If it's in Europe I definitely would drive with hotelstops. Anyway personally I'd take them on the airplane as youn as possible and if for some reason they should be older (from 10-12 wks) I'd let them travel from 6-12 months when their a bit older. Espoecialy if they have to go as cargo. But again that's a very personal choice. Good luck!

Well, I can't take a pup as a hand luggage because it will be definitely too heavy. We have been discussing the problem with a friend, who has the same problem to solve. And she was told that the period 9-12 weeks was OK for the travel, but I have read that 8-11 weeks is a Fear Imprint Period, so it looks quite bad. Read here: www.doglistener.co.uk/puppies/criticalperiods.shtmlBut on the other hand 6-14 months is the second Fear Imprint Period. So I would rather take it between 4 - 6 months.... This will be an intercontinental flight US - Warsaw or Berlin. Quite long-lasting, I am terrified ....

As far as I know only babies 21 days after rabies shot can enter Poland (via plane) so brining before 4 months directly to Warsaw is rather not possible. I have sent many babies at different age by plane and all were totally OK.

Ginger came at the age of 4 months. It was a loooong flight, and she was a bit disorientated when she landed. After 2 weeks, she fitted in perfectly and now, she is a happy dog, no traumas after the flight.
