My soon-to-be 3 year old weimaraner Sebastian has had a few seizures over the last 6 months. The first one which one of us actually saw was in December (neighbour claims he saw him having one in the yard a few months prior), the next was in January and the most recent one was today (March 17th). What usually happens is he throws up, then has a seizure. The seizures haven't been that severe (though it is awful to watch). They last less than a minute, then he's disoriented, clumsy and very frightened afterwards (growls and snaps if anyone approaches, which, for Sebastian, is very unusual - he's a lover, not a fighter!) but in 10-15 minutes he's back to his old self. Wants extra cuddles, but that's about it. He doesn't eliminate during the seizures but he does froth at the mouth and he salivates excessively.
I have been in contact with my vet since Sebastian had his first seizure and she feels that Sebastian should be put on seizure medication because he has had more than one seizure in the last six months.
I'm not too sure I want to do this because the meds they will put him on can cause liver damage and I am not sure it is worth risking the liver damage in order to manage what, to me, are seizures which don't occur that frequently and they don't seem to have much effect on him, however, I am not an expert, just a regular pet owner. Sebastian is my first weimaraner so I am not sure if this is something which weims are prone to. When I was researching the breed before I bought Sebastian, I don't recall seeing anything about weimaraners being prone to seizures.
I am supposed to meet with my vet on Saturday to discuss my options but was hoping someone on here could help me a bit more. I'm not a veterinarian so maybe my thinking that they aren't very frequent and have no effect on him is wrong? If you were me, would you put your dog on the medication? I do plan on researching it a bit more but really would appreciate any advice anyone can give me.
Thanks in advance!
