On Friday, June 16, 2006, we got a phone call from a woman who does rescue in Oklahoma. She told us of two puppies that had been found living under a bridge. A father and son had been out for a morning run and while they were running across a bridge when they heard whimpering. They stopped and the son went under the bridge to check out the sounds. There he found two puppies, after a bit of coaxing he got them to come out and saw that they were covered with ticks, and that were walking strange. They took them the vet where they were dipped for the tick infestation and x-rayed their legs. It was discovered that a car had hit both of the pups and both have a broken leg. Charlie's leg was healing, but not properly, and Parker's leg was thought in need of being amputated. The wonderful family that had found them spent $400 in the first vet visit to evaluate them. They had contacted the two weim rescue groups that try to handle that area and both had to turn them down due to the number of weims they already have. We verified the contacts and agreed to accept the puppies. One of our Volunteer Couples, Lara, and Nate were traveling to Oklahoma over the weekend and quickly agreed to drive the extra miles to pick up the puppies and bring them back to Kansas City.
They arrived in Kansas City on Sunday, June 18th around 8pm. Severely emaciated, and limping, we welcomed them with open arms. So small, not the 5-month-olds I was expecting, more like 3 months old! Dead ticks’ still hanging from their ears, but tails a waggin! They have heart and a great attitude. We brought them home, fed them a good dinner, and they settled in for a good night’s sleep.
We took them to our vet this morning. After being x-rayed it was determined that both pups were injured about 2 to 3 weeks ago. Both would need corrective surgery, and they felt Parker's leg did not need amputation. Pins and possibly plates are needed, along with scraping away the callus on the bone, which has already formed. The biggest shock of all - they are only 12 weeks old! Parker just lost a puppy canine tooth. The surgery will take at least two hours for each of them. We are in a Catch 22 situation where they need the surgery as soon as possible, but the vets are afraid to put them through surgery until they gain some weight. Parker weighs 31 pounds and Charlie 23 pounds. We have be given one week to get as much weight a possible on them, their surgery is scheduled for June 27th. Blood work will be done on June 26th to ensure their systems can take the surgery.
Accepting Charlie and Parker has proven to be a very costly decision. We want to do right by the puppies and give them the opportunity to live a normal life, but we need help. It has been a long time since Heartland has asked for help from weims lovers through the Internet. We have held our own local fundraisers to keep Heartland going, but this is more than we can handle on our own. We are asking for donations to assist us in paying for the surgeries. We are not asking for huge amounts of money, every dollar counts! We are a 501c3 organization and your cash donations are tax deductible. You can donate through PayPal to: heartlandweimrescue@kc.rr.com or you can mail a check to:

Updates will be posted as their story unfolds. We thank you for your donation.
