First, you have to have a big pile of dry sticks and tree limbs in the driveway.
Then Dad opens all the doors so you can run as fast as you can around the back yard, through the dining room and kitchen, down the stairs, and out the garage and around the front yard. You have to go as fast as you can, and stay as close to the edge of the yard as you can get but NOT step out of the yard.
Then Dad takes this big scissors thing and takes sticks out of the pile and cuts them up to take them in and put them in a fire in the fireplace. When he does that, you have to run over and grab sticks out of the pile to carry out in the yard and chew up. You have to go as fast as you can so that you can get more sticks than anyone else.
As soon as Dad bends over to pick up his pile of sticks, you have to drop everything you have and run as fast as you can to go in the house when he does.
The one that gets up the steps first but is closest to Dad wins. The best position is in front but exactly where Dad cann't take a step unless you move. When you get in the correct position, you have to stop and look at him to see what he is going to do. You lose points if you stop but are not blocking the steps so that he has to stop. You have to get him to say "MOVE" at least three times, but you have to move at least one step each time he tells you to.
When Dad puts the sticks in the fireplace, it is time out and you can lay down or go to the kitchen and get a drink. If you get a drink, you have to make as much noise as possible and dribble as much water as you can on the kitchen floor. If the judges decide that you haven't made enough noise or dribbled enough water on the floor, you have to go stand behind Dad and sneeze on the back of his neck.
The game is only over when Dad gets tired or the pile of sticks runs out. Usually, Dad gets tired first--and will close the garage door. If there are still sticks left over, you have to go sit at the garage door and whine. The game is over when you have gotten Dad to say "That's ENOUGH!" one dozen times.
And that is how you play Diddle Fitch.
