Well yes its a mad house for sure. I think the worst part is laminate floors, oh my good grief you should see my rug fly when the dogs think they are going out. They are all such lovely characters, all different and I love them all. Rachel

Hi Rachel and welcome from me (Nina) and my 3 (soon to be 4) Weims. I have had 1 litter which has been affected by Mast Cell Tumours to the tune of 20%, and have had to start over (I'm being a bit brief because I've typed this 3 times now - lol). A bit sickening as 4 of the pups from the litter qualified for Crufts on their 1st time out . So we are starting over and are importing a puppy from Poland. Anya has a lot to offer us with her super lines, she's from great dual purpose stock. We are expecting her to arrive later in the year...... can't wait ;D. Nina

Hi Lynn, no I don't think I've ever met you, but Helena Jupp has told me all about you I hear you are great friends How is that nice bitch of yours going? I saw her at Crufts last year. Do you handle your dogs or does someone else have her? I have a terrible memory and can't put your name to a face but if you've been in the ring I'll recognise you when you say hello. Next time you are at a show, you'll have to come over and introduce yourself. I'm sure I'll recognise you and feel silly

Hi Kate, I dread to think what Helena has told you I handle most of my dogs myself but my friend handles my young bitch for me. Teresa with Bifonda Aint too Proud to Beg is her dog. I dont think we have ever met, but I will certainly seek you out and say "hi" next time I see your name in the catalogue. My next champ show is East of England. Lynn

Hi Lynn. no, don't worry about what I have been told, I form my own opinions. What dog (s) do you handle in the ring? May be I will know you from your dog (that is usually how I remember people best!). I'm going to Southern Counties (it's close to me) but I won't be at 3 counties because I'm off to the America again. cheers Kate

Hi Its been a week since I could get back on here. Thanks Irena and Audry it was great to get a second at Crufts this year. I love my girl Alley and she did us proud. Also to Nina are you sure that Mass Cell tumours are hereditary? From what people tell me in the Uk they are not. But then I dont know enough about tumours. I have seen several uk dogs with tumours, lumps, and cysts. Is this something thats creeping in the breed more? Can anyone tell me if the Uk health survey suggested the increase of mass cell tumours ?
Well I am the proud mummy again not to dogs this time but cats. I had to stay up all Tuesday night and help my Siamese girl birth 5 kittens. Thats a new thing for me, but I am smitten with Siamese cats, they are gorgeous. Cats are very similar to dogs in many ways, tell you what though the sack they came in is way tougher than dogs, because I can break puppy sacks with my fingers, but I could not do that with the kittens, I had to get scissors in the end.

Hi Rachel - I don't want to hijack your thread, but I thought I'd reply re the MCT's. I was told by someone at the AHT that I could breed from Jensen without risk. I had heard that a niece of my bitch had a litter affected by this too, and that was enough for me to hold back for a while, and up to now, I still would think hard about using him. Then his litter sister got it. Talking to peeps it seems that maybe there is more of a predisposition to it, but the AHT are now researching into MCT's in Weims and Boxers, and are asking for DNA samples and pedigrees from Weims and Boxers that are both affected and non-affected. If you are interested in helping out the details can be got from the Weimaraner Club of GB or the AHT. They hope to be able to do a study into whether there is a problem in the genetics. Without enough samples, they can't put forward a case for funding. The breed survey didn't highlight a problem, which is quite worrying really.
We are going back to the showring this season ready for Anya's arrival in the UK at the end of the year, so if you see someone showing a scarred male, that'll be us - would be nice to meet and chat.
Nina

The reason I am interested in Mass Cell tumours is that my friend has a Weimaraner that has had them. She told me that they were not hereditary. I have not come across them you see, and it is always a good idea to know the possibilities of hereditary problems in a line, especially when I do go out to stud occasionally. As you cant keep breeding to your own dog all the time, and I find the biggest problem is that hereditary problems seem to be pushed under the carpet, for fear of loosing a dog at stud or a bitch. If you know what I mean. Instead of starting all over again. I changed my line from years ago. We are very happy that we seem to have a good line at the moment, but it only takes one rotten apple in the apple cart.

Thats exactly what I did when I found my big show winning line was producing HOD. I rehomed and started again by importing from lines I had researched. Personally I dont think any modern line is free from genetic problem but we can at least try and improve the health of the breed by looking carefully for less problems and being open with each other as breeders. The international Weimaraner community is pretty small now and we need to help each other if the breed is to go forward.
