Hey, everyone, I was wondering, where could I read about weim weight? I've got my baby, but she looks very thin and slim. She is 9 weeks old, weights 5,5 kg. She gets dry food, 250 g a day as reccomended. She poops a lot. As Irena said, maybe she is not getting everything from that food, that's why it goes out:)? Does anyone have or know about puppy's weight? She gets now Royal Canin puppy.
Thanks , Miglë

The pups of my last litter are now 14 weeks old and weigh average 13 kgs. I feed my dogs 'Biomill Junior Large breed'. I have also good results with the brand Eukanuba. I also feed them twice a day 'Duck', a natural frozen meat. We don't have weight problems, however these pups are also very active !!!
I should advice you to give your pup some more food, because a puppy always stops when he has enough. I always feed more than what's written on the paper bag.... Or maybe change brand, because it's not the right brand for your pup ... [/quote]

Thanks, Kobie, but what about pooping? Also, I am a very begginer, so I really don;t know, what's good for her. I am really afraid of giving something, that isn' written anywhere:) What if she is going to eat everything I give her? I mean, if she won't stop? Because now she eats as hungry wolf.. should I give her clabber? lots of our breeders in LT recommend that... ***, I'm so worried - she is my first baby:)))

much poop can show you that the brand you give her is not the right one for your dog. You have brands (like Eukanuba) who reduce very much the poo. Cheaper brands also give much poo, more than more expensive brands of kibble. As I said, you should not be worried about over feed your pup, they stop when they have enough.... If your pup would be too havy, (luxureous problem ) you can slow down a bit..... But it's probably also her motabolisme.... Like you say, she eats like a hungry wolf, so she will probably haven't got enough with the 250 grs.

Ok, I'll try to give her Eucanuba - it's also hard to find in Lithuania. Royal and Purina are quiet expensive.. Ant ok, I will give her more... I heard about indigestion, which happens, when dog is overfed. That's why I am so worried:) Thanks, Kobie, again!

I wouldn't be worried about indigestion, but more about joint problems when a pup is too fat. Believe me, it's much better to have a pup which is a bit too slim, than an overweight pup. If she poos a lot, I'd say the brand is not good for your pup, just like Kobie said. Just try another brand and see what she does. Tables on a bag of food are just guidelines. If your puppy stays thin and is hungry all day long, just feed a bit more. You feed a dog by looking at it, not by just feeding according to guidelines. Good luck!

Well she has got her two pills from worms, and faeces look clear .. Yes, I am afraid to overfeed her, cause she has to have good exterior..In another topic here I've read, that lots of our collective use extra food.. I'll try that also..Fresh beef, chicken.. Maybe she'll like that. Photos of me and my Brera are available here - she is 8 week old, after one week being with me, she looks taller, but thinner.. blueabyss.sytes.net/gallery/Brera-namie/Take a look at photo nr 0617 - already ribbs look clear! Now she is more thinner!

I think she looks good at the photo's... She is not too thin. If she grows, it's normal that she will need some more food.....

Well, your weim eats "like a wolf" because it gets too small food probably. Besides pups' feeding habits come from a breeder's. If the breeder dose food a few times a day and there is nothing left after a meal, the pup will always fall on its food. Pups which are fed at will never eat fast and that's better for their stomaches. It is always better to give more then it is written on the bag then less. You will not overfeed you pup because pups are always very active and grow fast, besides weimaraners are not gluttons in majority. You must be aware of one thing: when you start to feed with a "normal" food (prepared at home), your pup will not want to eat dry dog food at all in future. But I would risk that anyway. I think that she will be much "fatter" when you start extra feeding. If you care about her "good exterior" you must be sure she gets everything she needs.
Have you considered her genes? Maybe her parents are very "light" too?

szarasfora, I took this puppy from Imperium Star. Her parents are Oska Ashlaren and Roxi. They look very nice and have good exterior. I guess I've been feeding her less, than she should get.. The food is great, I don't doubt. Though speaking of "raw" food, I would not like to prepare at home..Of course, I'll give her fresh sugar bones of beef, but not porriges or ... I guess, she misses ferments?? have you heard about Enteroferment? Extra for puppy?

lucie, deep sympathy if your puppies eat everything from the ground like mine:) stones, ground, cement... How to stop that... Thanks for the weight - I now see, everything's ok. Brera is about 9 kg. I will give her more food. Szarasfora - check the pics again - another topic is how to put her correctly ( for standing), because she doesn't listen, I don't know what to do.... Huh, anyway - she was very sick for few days, I had to search for vet during the holidays in LT - thanks God, I found one, he gave her lots of medicine.. Now she might have a cystitis, last night she ran all the time wanting to pee, but nothing just few drops came...So I spent another long slepless night... I'll take her to vet today..

Mine ate (and still eat) everything too, so annoying. Never had this before tbh. It gets less, so I think all you can do is distract them, train them and keep your fingers crossed they won't eat anything nasty. I train them by putting a bowl with food on the floor, walk past it with pup on lead and distract them with something nice. If they even think about putting their heads in the bowl, I'll correct them (saying NO) and praise them big time (!!) when they pay me attention again. I also teach them the command "let go". As long as that's very consistent, it should really help you in these circumstances. Good luck with your little one and the cystitits. That's quite easy to solve thank goodness!!!

Migle, the quality of the food you feed your pup determines the amount of poop that you get. Many of the cheaper foods have alot of cereal in them and dogs can't disgest that. When you go to purchase dog food check the ingredients listed. Meat (chicken / beef / or meat by products should be listed as the first and possibly the second ingredient as they would then make up the highest percentage of the food (at least 28% of the dry food for puppies). If you find grains (corn / wheat etc) as the first ingredient then this food will cause more poo and is not as good in terms of nutrients for your growing dog. Also check on the bag for the feeding guide. It will tell you how much to feed for a pup in relation to how heavy the adult will grow to. eg 500 grams for a 8 week old weim as it will grow to about 30-40 kgs. You then spilt this into the number of meals you are feeding. 2 meals of 250 grams. You may not be feeding enough food to your weim. To check the weight, I look to see how many ribs I can see on my pups when they run around. no ribs showing - then the pup is too fat. Two ribs showing then the pup is at about correct weight. Four or more ribs showing then the pup doesn't have enough weight. Pups that are too fat can do damage to their joints - so don't let your pup get so fat that you can't feel the ribs. I also feed raw bones to my pups (chicken necks, wings and carcasses, lamb and beef bones. If you feed raw bones then substitute these for a dry food meal, don't feed as well as kibble. I give bones three a week. I also feed my dogs leftover vegetables - but NOT onions, or tomatoes or uncooked potatoes. They love them. I hope that this helps you.
