Hello everyone,
I would like to ask all of you seasoned, wise Weimy-owners how it is that you stimulate and challenge your dog mentally. I'm sorry if I sound a bit silly or plain ignorant but can you share your favourite exercises/games with us? When we brought Iago home we were aware of how intelligent and energetic Weims are and we are trying our best to keep Iago happy and motivated. But I'm afraid that we might not be doing enough, since we don't vary the games very much. Your suggestions and advice are much appreciated. Thank you! rute and miguel (concerned humans) iago (the weim)

I have 4 weims, and they do so very much to stimulate each other that it is amazing. I noticed a big difference when I added my 2nd weim. Jack is the youngest and most hyper, but even he's calmed down at 4yrs, if they're not playing with each other, or following one another or hunting one another to make sure no one else has found some secret treat somewhere, we play frisbee, they luv playing ball, even though Groovy's version is "keep away", I have a bubble machine because they love chasing bubbles, we go to the park and sniff every last little thing together, we'll be having a pig ear hunt on Easter. My guys are very easily entertained, a passerby is a big entertainment for them because it's someone to run the fence and talk to...Jack prefers chasing the balls, Groovy prefers having anyone chase him, Dreamy prefers tug of war, and Reiman just wants to be in the middle of the excitement but since she's 10ish she would prefer not to actually have to do all that much! May sound boring, but I found out what each one's fave "thing" was and I do that with them most of the time because they like it. What' Iago's "thing"? Great name, by the way, how did you come up with it?

hi Cassandra thank you for sharing this with us. Iago loves to play fetch and chew on tough rubber balls. He loves sniffing eveything and anything too. I wish I could get Iago some company but for now that is out of the question i'm afraid. Iago, the cunning vilain in Shakespeare's Othello, sounded good to us and though we didnt want our Weim to be a meany, we were pretty sure he'd prove as artful, intelligent and astute as his name-sake. I have 2 weims and they do play together but when we go on a walk I try and make it more exciting by playing hunt the treat in the bushes and long grass. We sometimes take a ball as well and they chase around after it. Max always lets me know when he wants to play a game he stands in front of me and stomps and grumbles. His favourite is hunt the treat but I think that is more then likely because it involves food I also at home give them Kongs stuffed with apple and peanut butter which I put in the freezer overnight, these keep them amused for ages - once again the food theme going on there hahahaha I also have a bubble machine in the summer which we put in the garden and the kids and the dogs jump around for ages chasing the bubbles. Gets some of their energy off and I hope is interesting for them, they seem to enjoy it anyway

This weekend was Pet Expo, and I helped man the booth for Heartland Weimaraner Rescue. (it is a LARGE fair combining rescue, various pet information and demonstrations, training, and vendors--several thousand people attended)
I took Enka, who sat at the entrance to the booth and worked the crowds with the adeptness and finesse of a combination of seasoned political candidate and side show barker. She drew people in like a magnet---and reveled in every second of the attention.
Give a Weim a stage to perform on, and a part to play, and I guarantee you that William Shakespeare never saw a more tireless performer so completely addicted to doing the part they have the best the world has ever seen it performed, or the adulation and attention of anyone who passes.
Enka would have won several Oscars for her performance, if they only gave them for her catagory.

hi Wetdog its funny you should say this 'cause I had noticed that when Iago knows he is being watched he goes to great lengths to put on a "show". Case in point - when we are out on our "walking on a leash" practice in the morning and happen to come across the nice guys from the garbage pick-up crew, who always like to say hello, he just perks up, grows about 3 inches in height and walks around on his best behaviour. Head up, chest out, happy gait, obeying every command so willingly it looks like he's under hypnosis! He knows he's being watched and he apparently loves to be complimented and noticed by strangers. They do love to be noticed! I went to the local car boot this week with the dogs as we are all moving to Saudi Arabia later this year, so I am clearing out some stuff ready for the move. The dogs drew the crowds Which was great as it got people looking at my stuff LOL! Must take them next time too. They both basked in the attention and lay either side of the pitch like stone lions. I think they were guarding our stuff hahahahaha. Eric can be a little aloof with strangers like it is a privilidge for them to be allowed to touch him, he becomes very regal and "posh" ;D . Max just laps up the attention and plays up to the crowd, getting as many tummy rubs as possible and dishing out kisses to anyone who will have one, the more the merrier for him hehehehe.
