Yesterday we had the first of three training days, from a real tracking specialist.
We've been doing this with Mowgli for almost a year now. We started with a simple course, run by the Weim Club Holland. This was pretty easy, but still great fun, so we decided to go on.
And now we're training with a man, who only does natural tracks with his dogs (he has special Schweiß-dogs). He's also doing these courses in the weekend, together with his wife.
Well, the last couple of times, Mowgli did pretty good, but yesterday was crap.
She started of on the 24-hours old track and she actually did fine. The first 200 mtr's were no problem, but then there was a leg. She took it well, but the handler (Meike; she's my best friend and co-owner of Mowgli) thought she was fooling her and pulled her back. That was a shame, but after some help they took off again. That went fine for another 50 mtr's and then the forest changed. We came in a part of the forest where there were many leaves on the ground. And Mowgli just couldn't/wouldn't do that. I'm still not sure if it was wouldn't or couldn't
Anyway, from that moment on, she became very nervouss and forgot what she was doing. And Meike just couldn't get her back. So after a couple of minutes, they helped her a bit, so she could move on, but nothing really helped. After a while Mowgli picked up the track again, but she didn't do it as good as she did at the beginning. Well, at least we know we're still not there yet.....
