Last weekend we had a bloodtracking course. It was about the reason why people (have to) track, how to recognise the way game was shot and how long you expect the track to be.
It was about laying tracks, recognising it after 24 hours and how to teach a dog the basics. It was great.
At the end of the second day, it was time to do some work with the dogs.
Anyway, since we've been doing this for quite a while, they'd already laid tracks for the 2 of us (Meike & Mowgli and Daan and I). The others were newcomers and they had tracks of about 2 to 3 hours. Since we couldn't practice laying tracks, ours were already laid, we could do an extra track for Pien (the Leonberger).
Anyway, off we went. Meike with Mowgli and the track layer (a forrester) and I went off with his wife, who'd laid my track, a hunter and another spectator.
I had Daan on the lead when we saw a Kuvazs running through the woods. No owner in sight, when this dog started heading towards us. Suddenly the owners appeared from around a corner, but they did nothing to get the dog back. This dog came up towards Daan and started sniffing. She did nowt and he kept his distance. Then the owner was close enough to grab his dog, which he tried. But he missed....
Suddenly this dog went for Daan. He started biting her and had her on her back in no time. She screamed like a pig, which she always does when something like this happens. He kept biting her once she was on her back and the owner did nothing to get him off her. Suddenly Daan got up again and wanted to run off, but she was still on the lead. So she turned around my legs and the dog chased her and wanted to bite again, but missed...... He had my leg. I was so sick and tired of this bastard dog with his bastard owner, that I kicked the dog to get him off us. The owner went ballistic when he saw that and kicked me to the knee. The hunter who was with us, grabbed him by the neck to prevent him from hurting me even more. I started shouting at him, trying to explain why I'd kicked the dog, but to no avail. I decided to walk away from him, b/c I was soooo angry .
The track layer and wife of the forrester called her husband immediatly and he was there b4 they could run off.
He wrote down both our stories and after seeing my left leg and bruised right knee, advised me to press charges against this man. I will do that later this week. Daan is ok thank goodness.
Anyway, this took quite a while, so I could become calm again before working the track.
When we started, we were still a bit shaky, but we started this 24 hour old track anyway. And Daan did a fantastic job!!!! It was the very first time I had the idea we both knew what we were doing. I saw it when she went off track and she realised she had a bloodtrack to follow instead of using her nose up in the air. We were only helped once, the other times we made a mistake, I realised it myself and got her back on the track again! I am so proud of her.
And I am ever more proud of Mowgli and Meike. Mowgli worked a 52 hour old track and they haven't made one single mistake!!!!!! Unfortunately I couldn't see it, while I was busy working my own track, but I am so proud of them!
And last but not least, Pien did great as well. This track was very easy and not long at all, but she indicated every drop and all the woundbeds. She wasn't interested in the deerskin at all though, but the reward was everything for her, hehehe.
Despite the little incident, we had a great weekend!!!
