Once again, our small town is missing a young girl. I volunteered myself w/4 weims to search the area she was last seen but our new chief of police is from the city and prefers (or is doing what he knows) to head the patrolman's duties instead of sitting behind a desk (as the previous two chiefs did). He doesn't seem to realize we live in such a huge wilderness and it takes nearly the entire town to volunteer to ground search, without any dogs participating.
He declined my offer yesterday with the reason that if the dogs found her in a building then the court would use it against the case that the police force use unregistered dogs (for tracking). I wasn't volunteering to search buildings, but wilderness.
I began looking into what we'd have to accomplish, how and where, etc., to obtain tracking titles on my weims as it costs so much money to get one up here temporarily and this has only occurred once.
The volunteer search and rescue (townspeople) will begin ground searching, possibly this weekend and its an area I know well as I kept my horses there for 15 years.
I'm taking the weims today to ground search for a few hours and have my cell phone/camera and will send an email to a friend who trains golden retrievers who I've worked w/rescuing Goldens to see if we can become certified to legally ground search in the future.
I read on line how its done, realize it will take time and needs to become a regularly scheduled lifelong commitment. For now, Misty & Slade run out front with Bully & Boris very close to me so we are safe re: wildlife. There have been rumors of a bear within this area but it might also be a muskoxen as they are also in the area along Dry Creek and my dogs are used to them as we've been in close contact w/them while I'm gathering our berry supply.
Misty & Slade were around my horse so they seem to treat the muskoxen as they did the horse(s). Bully & Boris have followed their example and they listen to the command to come if they show any other interest at all.
We did have a small group of people from "down south" that were very active in tracking and hunting, tracking injured game, etc., but they have pulled up stakes and headed south recently. I just discovered them prior to their leaving, they had at least 2 german men come to Alaska for clinics in the past. I sorry I hadn't found out sooner and participated! They were in the Anchorage/Wasilla area.
