Ilana, I heard about training center for dogs in St-Petersburg. They use a treadmil there too.

Sorry, Ilana. I'm not expert in dog training. But I guess that in the hot climate region a treadmil is a good way to provide enough move for the dog. I heard it's not recommended before 7 month and some use additional weighting materials.

Hi Ilana
One of the best things I think to condition a dog is to allow them to either swim or jump or play. We often let Jensen jump things like small benches in the park. We live in a built up area but there are still places to 'play' with your dogs.

The summer in Israel is very long and very very hot and the dampness is about 85%-95% most of the day and night,so the best way to keep the dog in a good condition in the summer is in the air condition on a treadmill if you can.
i can't take the dogs to the fields in the summer because it is too dangerous, snakes, ticks etc....
The only lake with sweet water that we have in Israel is 2 hours drive from my place.
I take them to the sea and to the dunes but i think it is not enough,

Ilana, I think you have the perfect thing there - sand. Some people I know travel to the coast to run their dogs in sand dunes. That is what they do with race horses here, and sport trainers recommend it for people too. Running in sand is difficult and builds up muscles. Going there for sunset sounds good. Take a picnic dinner and a cool drink. Very civilized! I have tried some of mine on a treadmill, when I look back, it was funny! They had their feet spread right out, and their legs were held stiff - my boy Phantom, big, brave dog that he is, was petrified of it! He couldn't work out why the floor was moving. Wendy

Since I have moved to Texas (where it seems that the heat NEVER goes away), I have purchased a treadmill. My older dogs are doing fine with it and yes, the younger dogs are a little leary of it.. but they are getting the hang of it. I start them off real slow (the lowest setting) and walk with them on it. They seem to be more comfortable with it when I am doing it with them. Then, once they are used to it, then I allow them to 'run' on their own. I had my husband weld a bar across the center of mine and that is what I attach the leash to so that they have to stay in one spot. I even had my daughter leash train the pups that I kept from my last litter just so that they could work on the treadmill. The treadmill is not alot different than running in a field, or joggin down the road in the city. I also have a big TV in front of the treadmill so that the dogs have something to do other than 'run' in place. I put on the hunting videos of pheasant and quail hunting.. they seem to enjoy it. My male (Britfeld's Vito Corleone), loves to watch the show 'Hunting with Hank' while he is working out in the house.
I really actually thought that I was the only one that ran my dogs on a treadmill and that is why I never said anything before.. I guess I was wrong! If you have any other questions, please ask! I have been running my GSPs and Weims on the treadmill for years now! (BTW, I try to start them slow as soon as 9 weeks. Not running, but just walking at a slow pace to get them used to the movement and feel of the treadmill and by the time that they are ready to move a little faster, then they go into real easy.)
