Hello, I have just began show dog training for the first time with "Cash" my male 6 month old Long Hair Boy. We live in Perth, Western Australia & I have not seen any other long Hairs here & my show trainers are unsure how his tail is suppose to be in the ring. Does it fall high or Low when I take him around? Also when I stack him do I hold his tail up high in my hand? Many Thanks Heidi

Hi Yeh I am very happy you have taken a step to showing lovely Cash well done Heidi His tail when running around the ring should be held in a manner expressing confidence is what the standard says. so level or up is fine As far as the standing goes well there is no golden rule we tend to hold it like the setter people do.. example below... Holding it by the tip and straight off the top line is best or if he can hold it himself all the better Good luck and keep me posted on his progress... Suzanne ;D

I always prefer a happy confident "tail up" his tail down looks like he's (or they are) unhappy and unsure...

Hello Heidi,
I have jusr recieved a 'reminder' from the Moderator advising that you had posted a query regarding the tail carriage on a Longhair Wei.
The current Breed Standard (ANKC website) states the following:
Quote "Set on slightly lower than other similiar breeds. Tail strong & well coated. Carried hanging down in repose, when alert or working carried level or higher" Unquote
Ms Bromhund is reasonably correct in her statement and I would say that a tail carried 'up' is generally preferred to one carried 'down'.
In the old days a tail 'carried confidently and not in a gay manor' was generally the accepted preference.
Some Breed Standard for some Gundogs actually ask for a tail to be carried 'scimitar' or 'not above the level of the back', etc, but the Weimaraner (and Longhair) do not specify such requirement. Whether the L/Hs tail actually curls over and touches the back or is carried straight up is (technically) fairly irellavent
I guess that from a Judging point of view though, seeing a tail up, whether on the stack or on the move is generally more pleasing, however a good Judge will also look at the other aspects of the dog as well and take an overall picture.
Some people (Judges included) incorrectly assume that if a tail is not 'up' when in the ring or working then there is a temperament or attitude problem. In some cases this may be true, but quite often it can also demonstrate that a dog is totally relaxed and comfortable in a particular environment and doesnt need to have its tail 'up'.
Having regularly handled Weis & L/Hs, (and bred both types) I think its always a real bonus if your dog holds his tailup 'naturally' by himself and without human intervention - some dogs can do it .. others do it but not so well and then the rest can be encouraged to do it with the right training and stroking !!
How you hold the tail in the ring is something that will evolve as you and your dog develop into a team. You will fairly quickly learn what is comfortable for the dog, for you and which projects his features to the Judge in the best possible way. Keep experimenting with different styles, watch others, take advice from other handlers, not only of your own breed, but also of similiar breeds to the L/H !!
If you Google Aust CH: Happylea Kings Silver you might find some piccys of Australia's leading Wei L/H (Dogzonline Pt Score as at 23Apr07) and his sire Aust GRAND CH: Greysouthen Kings Legend ET QC LHC. These might be of interest to you
Regards/Peter~

With the LHs in the ring, I don't think there is a lot you can do about where they hold it when on the moove. You will get what you get according to where their tail set is, and how they feel at that time. The thing that makes a difference in the ring with tails is in stacking. There is one dog here (now retired) that was always stacked with the tail up, and I really don't like how that looks. With mine, and most others, they are stacked with the tail held out, sort of setter style, or just a little higher, and it gives a nicer line.
I will see if I have pics of both and send them to you privately.
Wendy
